No, local tech school and that was a good choice for me. I understand what you are saying, so maybe ask in the interview how long is it usually before you get to drive some. Good luck and keep us posted with it.

The hiring manager was really good about telling me what I'd start at and what the career ladder would look like.
Still though, it may not hurt to ask at the interview. ABF wants guys that will stick with them long term (and move up within the company).Sean_Reno Thanks this. -
Also, I had no forklift experience, but you don't need any.
ABF will put you with a more experienced person for a week and teach you how to work the dock. It's pretty easy. You should be able to pick it up within a few days, so don't worry about that! -

Not sure why working the dock is intimidating to a lot of folks, It's the easy part. May rework a pallet or 5, Double layer some yucky stuff, Fingerprint dunnage, Build some base supports for rolling product ( Hammer and Nails ) Remove those base supports. Use load bars and straps Etc etc etc....
Also the yard man, Build sets with either a Road unit or yard unit. It's pretty dang easy, Next day could be out on the road lumping around Pallets of Miley Cyruses HIV test kits to justine beibers house them swapping nasties . Always something different.
Depends on the size, Get to know each and every person working through your barn. Helps out a great deal when on the road, Bounce ideas off each other or who is having a shindig at their place. Great family to be a part of.
Morale is good.
Forgot to mention. Going to work the dock anyway, No way around it. No clue about other terminals. Here everyone is qualified driver and no one is dedicated dock unless you been a Bad Bad boy.Last edited: Apr 20, 2015
