Take advantage of the interpretations - 395.8 Question 1:
Question 1: How should a change of duty status for a short period of time be shown on the drivers record of duty status?
Guidance: Short periods of time (less than 15 minutes) may be identified by drawing a line from the appropriate on-duty (not driving) or driving line to the remarks section and entering the amount of time, such as 6 minutes, and the geographic location of the duty status change.
If you bump the dock and dive into the sleeper, or drop and hook, it may not take you 15 minutes of line 4 time.
Flag the stop, draw the line, show the location, and add the number of minutes of on-duty time. 5 minutes, 8 minutes, whatever. Just be sure to total it all up at the end of the day.

Most people dont realize that you dont have to show 15 minutes on pretrip or posttrip.

Quote from a SD Dot inspection. "A thorough preinspection will take you thirty minutes, we expect to see at least a 15 minute inspection everyday. This is your only verbal warning."

I've always done it like in the second image and never got dinged for that by the dot.
On paper logs they will try to catch you for some more fictitious writing, like when I got caught driving from Liberal KS to Tucumcari NM in 2hours. -
-
I do 15 minutes when I arrive and 15 minutes to check out at a customer if the stay is an hour or longer. That way there's at least a 30 min sleeper break and depending on when it occurs my break after 8 hours may or may not be covered.

What about 395.13 part B(3) ?
(3) Exception. A driver failing only to have possession of a record of duty status current on the day of examination and the prior day, but has completed records of duty status up to that time (previous 6 days), will be given the opportunity to make the duty status record current. -
After you get it caught current you are still required to show ALL changes of duty status and all corresponding on-duty time.SMTatham Thanks this.
