is all really a big to do about nothing, The Times They Are a changin and before long cameras will be required by federal law in all trucks. its just a matter of time.
personally I don't see what the big deal is.
if my safety manager wants to come ride with me for a week he's welcome.
if the dota or state police wants to come sit in my truck for a week they're welcome as long as they bring their own donuts.
I got nothing to hide, I Drive my truck in a professional manner, and if they want to spend their time and money to discover that fact, who am I to stand in their way?
does the camera provide any benefit for me personally?
probably not but then again I'm not the one paying the truck payment, buying the fuel, bana license insurance registration, taking the risks...
I'm just the guy driving the truck.
doing my job, the way they pay me to do it, which includes sometimes doing it on camera.
How to deal with a driver facing camera?

I guess I'm with you on this Michigander. To me it's not that big a deal, as I know I'm driving fully alert and if there ever were an incident I'd look to the camera to cover my butt. The only issues I might have with it is if the company were to start "sampling" video to determine what percentage of time a driver has hands at 10 and 2 or might be eating a banana. Again, that wouldn't concern me so much, but the idea that once the camera is in place they might increase the ways it is used would be a concern.
Michigander Thanks this. -

It takes many small steps along the way.
With any small step, a larger step may only be a small step away.
You state that you don't worry about it, because you are 'a great driver' - so to speak.
Then you state that you may have issues with it under certain conditions.
Then you state that it wouldn't concern you so much even then, except it would if it were used to a greater extent.
How wishy-washy is that?
'Except that if it were used to a greater extent' is the key to this problem.
Because if it can't be stopped, it will be used to a greater and even greater extent, without end.
I could see a day when every driver is wired in to tech that would monitor every bodily function, every eye movement, every twitch a muscle makes.
Every conversation, every drink from a cup, every bite while driving, and every move made.
That is possible, even today.
And tomorrow it may be that a 'driver' is simply a backup for a computer program that is actually driving the truck.
But it would take many small steps along the way to make it reality.
The smallest of steps is to simply introduce the changes on new drivers little by little, who need the job to survive, and weed out the older drivers.
It would take a great undertaking of EVERY driver to stop this.
It would take a general strike, by EVERY driver, for perhaps a prolonged period.
But who among us can really afford that? Which is what they are counting on.59halfstep Thanks this. -
Aw shucks, Moosetek... you called my wishy-washiness!

I guess I don't understand why people are so quick to throw up their hands in defeat on issues such as this. It's either "its only a matter of time" or "if you have nothing to hide". If we would stand together and resist this crap, it wouldn't happen ever. Our rights are being trampled upon more and more as time goes on. Its rather appalling how easily some people accept it. And the people doing the trampling are happy as a clam that they have so many of us either accepting and defending it and so many more who are scared and think its hopeless.

Now here's another technology that is targeted at improving driver performance that's interesting:

Instead of a camera you get a green, yellow, or red light according to how efficiently and safely you are driving. Some companies are giving cash bonuses for staying in the green. Trucking company reduced rollovers from 20 to zero. Having that kind of immediate feedback for a driver might be better than an invasive camera. -
Wouldn't stick with a company that had driver facing cameras. Maybe, if you have to deal with one, just wipe boogers all over the little lens until they can't see you anymore? too far?
