Two questions for now, more to follow I'm sure.

    1) Im wondering at what temperature the engine fan should come on and go off.

    2) Also- oil consumption. I had the oil changed on my first trip. It looked like it was overfilled by about 2 quarts. It's now down about 1 quart from that at about 8,000 miles. What is considerd normal oil consumption?

Ecm should turn fan on at 216
Every cat I've owned have been down to the add when it's time to change oil 15,000
    So yours is compleatly normal

They all burn a little bit, more so as oil gets some milage on it

    Freightlinerbob Thanks this.

Oil consumption is spot on for that motor nothing to worry about there. I have my fan kick on at 205. You can set it to whatever you want. I think stock was 210 on mine.

OK thanks. I didn't notice it coming on at first so I've just been displaying the coolant temp on the readout and using the manual override at the bottom of big hills, of which we have no shortage in BC. But when trucking in the middle I haven't worried about it. Sure don't want to cook this thing before I pay for it.

i run an 04 mbn pulling a multiaxle trailer in ont grossing 135,000lbs plus. It was rebuilt 4 years or so ago. it has maybe 400,000 miles on it. i change the oil every 15,000 miles and it always uses 1 to 1.5 gallons in the last few miles before its due for an oil change. It also uses oil when its idled a lot. It also ran hot on the pyro and water temp until i got it reflashed. Now it runs cooler has more power and better fuel mileage to boot!

Can you enlighten all of us on how your changing when your fan comes on .

I do know that the setting on all the low nox files are set to turn fan on at 216.

Only the early 5ek and 6ts and some 1lw had the cooler 210 or 208 can't remember .
But that setting as far as I know can't be changed.
So I'm real interested on how your acomplishing this. Do tell.

As for the original ?? Your mbn fan will come on automatically when your ecm sees 216 water temp.

    Sorry I was wrong ;

Your mbn ecm will turn the fan on at 217

And it was only the pre low nox files in the early E models that had the 205 temp.
This also can not be changed.

You have to find someone who is smarter than the ECM. They can figure it out. We are not allowed to tell you how to modify the ECM program on here.

Well last time I looked into this was 5-6years ago when I was running a 1lw.
Then guys like pdi and Kurt could not change fan on temp.
It was set in stone and nothing you could do about it .
Now apparently it's easy as pie you say .
    Interesting.

Changing the temperature that the engine fan comes on is not an illegal emissions modification so not breaking any forum rules. How is done?

    truckon Thanks this.
