This one has been driving me insane the last year since I started doing horse transportation, there is no way to report people illegally hauling without the required dot information or cdl. There isn't a single spot on the fmcsa website or the state sites where i can say hey so and so is illegally hauling across state lines for $ without having a dot #, cdl, med card, or authority/insurance. In the horse transport world this is a HUGE thing that happens every single day 75% of these people are not legal and they are undercutting the legal haulers rates because they do not have to pay all the crap associated with being legal. You try that in a semi or pulling a standard hot shot car transport/flatbed you will get caught in an instant, but the DOT seem alot less likely to pull over horse trailers that are clearly over 10k and see if they have credentials.
Whats the point of being legal if all it takes is bubba joe and his 4 horse trailer to come and cut rates in half because he calls himself a "private hauler"? Does anyone have any sort of idea how one goes about reporting these mickey mouse operations?

What's there to report. It's probably perfectly legal what they're doing amd has absolutely nothing to do with commercial ization. For all you know. Them horses are going to a rodeo. I habe an ex GF that hauls horses all the time. She knows nothing about dot or fmcsa or anything. And her trailer is legally licensed.
Swiss Mountain Dog Thanks this. -
No, it is not legal to haul 10,000 lb+ gcwr across state lines without a dot number at the least. Period. I know they are not going to a rodeo i am watching them post their illegal rigs on sites intended for legal haulers to find fares. It is 100% illegal, and if your gf is pulling a rig with a combined weight over 10k and is being paid to move the horses she is operating in affront to the law and I seriously hope she gets fined and her rig impounded. The ONLY TIME it is LEGAL is if it YOUR rig & YOUR horses OR you are under 10k. If you are getting paid to haul someone elses horses over 10k in combined weight it is NOT legal, period.

I'm sure its super frustrating. I pull a hopper off farms every so often. Lots of farmers hauling commercially on their farm plates. Luckily were not in a super competitive area or they would put the hurt on us.
-
Well its super competitive in the horse world, I estimate out of every 100 horses moved 80 are moved illegally. When the base rate of operation legally is around 75 cpm and these idiots are like I will do it for 400 bucks on a 1000 mile run because they do not have to get log books, pay the 1k insurance bill a month, and all the dot compliance stuff its pretty much making me wonder wtf i bothered doing it legally for. There needs to be consequences before people care enough to get legal.

Sooner or later one of them will wreck and won't have cargo insurance. And when word gets out that someone lost a couple high dollar horses and had to eat the money because they used an uninsured hauler maybe others will stop using them.

atlasshruggery, G.Anthony and bigdogpile Thank this.

You go thru weigh stations and get stopped for inspections? Maybe "drop a hint" when talking to them like do you ever do spot checks on the "illegal rigs" just to make sure the public is safe type deal.
I would think if told right they may look into it for fine money they could get. Then because they were put OOS you can come in and ask what you want to legally haul the load what is the owner of the horses going to say? Besides once that word gets around of non-legal haulers causing isses with the horse owners they will not use them.

mickey mouse operations<--- cool ! I know about 20-50 fake trucking companies in los angeles area doing doublebrokering. and sad part is that they are growing. dot does not pay attention on them. another issue is fueling by stolen credit cards. I have seen few times people turned on pilot-flying j pumps outside using cards without logo-name on it. when illegal operations and fueling by stolen cards will be stopped in this country ?
-
As soon as the idiot that had his credit card stolen, reports it?Mudguppy Thanks this. -
