Yes, and it takes some planning. There are regularly very good paying loads into NYC and I still don't take those. I ran local there for years and have no desire to do it again 30 years later with more traffic, and trucks/trailers that are 15-30 ft longer than what I ran back in those days. I will go out to the island if it pays good enough. And I have taken NYC loads but you can bet they paid extraordinarily well.

Many times if it is a load into the NE states it has to pay closer to 4/mi then I will just go in, deliver, and deadhead out. Parking can be such an issue up there I just don't want to deal with it.

Waiting until empty before starting to look for the next load is the #1 mistake, as others have said and will be repeated again and again, you have to be pro-active in booking loads and planning ahead. And all of us will screw up from time to time and make a bad load choice, or your load cancels and everything past that now goes to crap, lots of things can go awry. That's just part of trucking these days, accept the minor setback and move on.

Also look at how much of the Mercer fleet chooses to stay below I-40 all winter long. Those who run the northern states have no shortage of freight and better rates. Do what the majority doesn't want to do and you'll have more and better paying choices.

I know a driver in Charlotte that got on that shortly after signing on. Said it got him home a lot and money was okay. As always loads may not be ready on time, imagine that.

Sorry wrong button. So when a load cancels on your pre booked load do you have to cancel your other loads or do you look for one going to the same area. Also is there a lot of ltl and is it hard to plan. Thanks

Last time I was up there, there was 5 feet of snow on the ground.
I'm currently playing in the corn fields of Indiana on my way to Lexington.

That's 450 after fuel. Do one a day and it's 2250 a week. For what? A part time job. Nothing wrong with that! Truck expenses go way down when you run those kind of miles.

    roshea Thanks this.

Well this will make week 3 with no AC. Thought we fixed the problem but gonna end up with a whole new system when it's over with. Meanwhile 1998 AC lines take a week to come in. In unrelated good news got this ship to avg 6.7 mpg on the trip up although we only had 7k on our back.
