He probably drives 700 miles per week at $3 per mile...

 

im not familiar with what flat beds get paid.. i run a dry van and go through a broker..no truck payment and i rent the trailer .i try to stay at 2 dollars a mile . last week i ran about 2400 miles and brought home 3100 after all the bills were paid

60k a year in your pocket is good money.
And your only a slave for the time you work vs when you own the truck you are a slave 24/7.
Commitment is way bigger to own your truck vs company man.

I dont know what you made last year But I know what I did in the oil field and I know the down side of expenses of running a business and I also know what life was like when I worked for someone and it wasnt bad at all.
60k a year in your pocket plus vacation and benefits are not being a slave at all.

 

Exceptions to every rule. I haul A trains. Empty one way, 9000 Lbs each wagon back. Return trip is 350 miles/night. I toot right along, so I do 8 mpg total average. I do 1600 miles/week. Work 5 nights/week. Log 40 hours total for the week. Get rich quick scheme ? NO! But it keeps me occupied until official, full time retirement. Do the math. Wanna do a route like this and buy a $200 k tractor ? Bzzzztt. No. Wrong. Not unless you have ZERO other expenses and need the write off.

 

You're talking to guys who bank money every year and take off from work for months at a time. And probably do weekends at home when they are working. Set and run their own schedule with no input or oversight from anyone else. I do the same thing working about 7 months a year. I can't wait for July to get here time to enjoy summer with family! Too hot to truck anyways.

When I had a company gig making over $60,000 a year I could look forward to an extended weekend onThanksgiving, a nice Christmas to New Year's break. And 2 other weeks of paid vacation. The rest of the year, about 48 weeks solid, I stayed burned out working 5 to 6 days a week and home every weekend long enough to say "hi, love you, bye".

That is slavery and if you think $60,000 a year is good for that kind of BS you can have at it. I'll never forget being home on Sundays you didn't dare answer that phone if the company called lol. Someone fell off a load that delivered 600-800 miles away and they wanted you to cover it. What a bunch of BS I don't miss that cap at all and actually enjoy trucking again.

If you have family responsibilities (which is important) stay a Company Driver. But if you have that ambition to make unlimited income, and being O/O is your goal, then step up, make a plan and make it work. Please note on this forum, you have "side liners" and you have "players". The "player" sees the future/opportunities from other "players" that put in the time and work. The "side liner" are happy at where they are and refuse to put any or no efforts to better themselves (being content and lack of drive).

I consider Rollin Coal, Hurst, Sheep Dog (many I can't name) are "players". 97% of their comments are based on experience and knowledge. It sets them a apart from the "chaff" that reside on this forum. And your smart enough to see it.

So continue to ask the questions, I do. I hope to be O/O in January 2016. I've been work on my business plan for 2.5 yrs. and the info from this board has helped my to see pitfalls ahead. Hang in there and keep push forward. And don't let the negative comments drown your focus. Peace.
