Yes, that is very true. Frankly, I hate cops. The reasons you describe are why. Most of them are good people, but the few that are no good are enough to make me despise and distrust the whole lot of them.

I for one, know for a fact that I do not have the temperament to tackle the responsibilities that go along with being an officer of the law. Yes, this cop who handled my situation is not the norm. However, there seems to be a problem within the South Carolina borders in the way they are handling their responsibilities. There is an ongoing investigation especially around this particular area regarding police/prisoner misconduct. The arresting officer in my situation seemed to be taking the word of the off-duty officer who initiated the arrest. Unfortunately for me, the off duty officer didn't seem to care much for big trucks on the roads along with the fact that he was apparently having a bad day.
So what's a fellow officer to do under these situations? The arresting officer had no other choice (or so it seemed) but to take the word of his colleague (even though this off duty officer was from another department). Therefore, on goes the handcuffs and as the arresting officer stated, "explain your side to the judge." Again, after the district attorney and my lawyers tried searching for any records of 911 calls and witnesses, it was then discovered that not only did these documents not exist, but there was no report filed by either officer involved. Naturally, due to the lack of evidence (mainly because there simply wasn't any), the courts have no other choice but to drop all charges and reimburse my fees.

You are right. Shaffer should have contacted your family. The only thing I think that could remotely excuse them might be that they assumed (bad thing for anyone to do) that with the phone call you are allowed that you would have contacted them. BUT, out of courtesy they could have called and said, "Have you heard from XXXX lately and are you aware of his situation?" If the answer was, "About him being in jail" or something like that, then they were done except maybe to offer some assistance if needed. If the answer was, "No, what is going on?", then they could have informed the family of the details as they knew them and offer assistance as needed.
