Hi,
How long do you have to store the bills of lading? I am an owner operator and I have a "full load "of old pods, over 5 years old. Is there any rule on how long you have to store them for the IRS or DOT?
How long do you keep the pods?

I would get a Neat scanner and scan them to your computer (with backup).

We have always kept ours for at least 7 years, I have a basement full.

Yup 7 years. Filed by year with appropriate tax documents kept in banker boxes. I scan all of them and back up the computer.

I still have logs and B/L from when I owned my own truck. And I sold it and went to a company truck more than 10 years ago...don't ask me why. JIC I have to CMA I guess

Officer: Fuel receipts?
Me: I get a statement mailed from my fuel card.
Previous BOLs?
Already sent them in for invoicing.
Toll receipts?
Have EZpass
As for the original question, the carrier needs to keep a copy for 6 months as supporting documents for logs. Other than that the fmcsa doesn't care.
The IRS can go back 7 years under normal circumstances (there is no limit if they can prove fraud).Last edited: Sep 2, 2015
