I keep a bug screen on my Pete in the Summer (Keeps bugs out of the Radiator) and Winterfront on usually after December (Protects Radiator and Grill from snow and ice, and helps to maintain optimum engine operation temp.)

i have actually had a layer of ice not only on the grill, but on the radiator as well.,.
i had to stop at the New Rochelle toll plaza, lift the hood, break away the ice on the grill, from the INSIDE then gingerly try to remove some of the ice from the radiator....
as i was there, the engine warmed up enough (since i was not driving, making the ice thicker/harder by the wind chill) and most of the radiator ice came off easy enough. -

short ankle boots do one no good, when the icy puddle one steps into, is over the top of the ankles....!!!!!!! -

when i drove a cascadia with dd15 in maine, -10 f, my engine had normal heat ranges. is the cardboard for extreme cold, or is it for a truck having mechanical problems?
-
Cardboard helps prevent the cold air from flowing thru your radiator and cooling the coolant. Of course the coolant is what brings the heat to the cab heater. If your coolant can't stay warm you won't have any heat in your cab.
If your coolant for cab heater comes from your block you will have heat. If your coolant comes from radiator to cab, you might not have as much or no heat.
Cardboard or a grill cover can slow the amount of leaking into the cab, also which helps keep it warmer in those cold bitter days.Straight Stacks Thanks this. -
I have a screen for the summer and a cover for the winter. I need a few new snaps for the grill. Do they just bolt rivet on? I just zip tied it.
@G.Anthony is correct about the ice build up. My truck was getting pretty hot last winter. Not over heating temps but way to hot for winter going down the highway. I had left the bug screen on and it was just caked with ice and snow and road grime. -
i have tried WD-40.......no good
I have tried Mink oils...no good
i WILL try soon, that water repellent i see on tv, and Lowe's sells it, most likely Home Desparate sells it as well..
why pisses me off, is the boots (Red Wings) i bought back in the fall of 2005, and had them resoled twice now, is "they say waterproof", when it should be advertised as "water-repellent".....
many times, i have had to wear plastic bags over my socks, THEN put the boots on. -
put it to you another way..if you ride a motorcycle, like i used to, come fall season, your t-shirt, and no gloves, will make you freeze up like an icicle, as you motor down the road, in 50 degree temps....that's not mechanical now is it...??
