I'm with Rabbi my receive is always better than most, but I run ssb rigs only, because most of them have better receive than am only rigs. Prefer galaxy 959 but a cobra 148/ grant are great receivers as well. If you run with your squelch turned up to cut out the back ground noise then you don't know what we are talking about. And my pre amp on my amp has about a 10db gain, so that helps allot too.

Different frequencies act differently to the surface of the earth uhv needs a repeater to get over mountains hf doesn't need a relay/repeater just power. And another reason you guys had to use a relay is because your radios were low output so they could be portable. That relay on top of the mountain could probably pull out your weak signal for 50 miles or better then with lots of power could transmit 5000 miles.

    Define miracle...
What some people take for granted many people assume to be impossible or a miracle.

One of my coworkers told me today that it must be a "miracle" that my ex is begging for an out-of-court settlement in this divorce proceeding but if all the facts were out in the open it would all make perfect sense.

that might only be true if the radio is unmodified or properly tuned to begin with.
If the radio was purchased used all bets are off.

Sorry guys if I don't buy into this transmit and recv an HR out any direction any time day or night without fail. Someone tells me that's how it was back in the 40's and 50's okay , my dad was naval communications , aboard ship 3 tours to Cuba per yr for 4 years 30days a crack late 40's early 50's , he listened to I believe WGN out of Chicago from Cuba no problem (AT NIGHT)
These days Chicago's WMAQ and WGN 2 superstations are hit or miss in the Ohio river valley region near Portsmouth OH. And that's transmitting 50,000 watts of power from atop the tribune tower . It is however said that as clear channel radio , at 50,00 watts they been known to be received "when conditions are right AT Night" as far away Canada , south America , Australia and Europe along with most of the U.S.
Note I live in Garrison Ky Straight line I'd imagine the one smaller than avg size city in between us and Chicago would be Dayton OH.
Not very big , but enough to stop us from picking up WMAQ & WGN during peek hrs. At night during the winter is best , and can usually hear a Blackhawks game from the A,M. dial in my Conversion van. while travelling along the AA hwy. once I turn off onto the KY rt toward home , I lose it , surrounded by hills.
Sure 400 miles even at 50,000 watts at night in the valley takes a hit. I understand you guys getting a perfect SWR match , and on SB doing better that we do on ch 19. But do you still recv and talk an hr out all the time without fail as you claim ?
It's seems to me travelling the country side in a rig , it's near impossible to not be surround by unfavorable conditions often throughout your day.
