You'll find the 8V92 in a lot of fishing trawlers. Find some old clammers, oystermen and / or fishermen, and you'll find some worthy mechanics for that engine.

I'll call 445 hp stock as a T/A. They love Delo oil too. Only stuff that stays in them. Should be a cable to the dash marked "Emergency" , That's not a parachute, it's an air kill flapper to keep it from running away.
Don't dog it like a dog and don't lug it, keep it high and tight but not at 2400 either. Power band is real tight like 1750 to 1950. She will pull down to about 1500 and then die. Check the oil daily...expect leaks, they all do.
It will also run backwards, don't let it lol....its real fun to see smoke coming from the air cleaner.
Don't idle it long either...fills air box with oil and don't let it sit there and hunt either. Their good motors if you take care of them but they wont touch a 3408 or a V8 Mack. Wont touch a series 60 either but.....are you racing?
They don't like cold weather either....hunt and rattle when cold. I've seen them idle at 2 lbs oil and run 38 to 42 depends on internals.
No CA either and yes easy $1500 on the marine side as salvage.
Good luck and have fun with it.

When you say hunt you mean at first start? Just give it some rev then i guess?
So 1950 huh ida figured above 2k on these detroits how you always here them scream.
Whats normal water temp on these things? -
Unless the rear ends were changed, they're not likely to be better than 4.11. In 1979, the national speed limit was 55, and you didn't ”gear fast, run slow” yet, especially with Jimmies.Last edited: Oct 15, 2015
Reason for edit: I remembered something else to add -
I was told to drive an old Detroit like you were pissed off at it, or slam your finger in the door, to get in the right frame of mind. I drove a Louisville Ford with a 238 in it, and after a long run one day, I came back, and parked it in the shop, next day, came in, my truck was gone. I asked the mechanic, where my truck was, he said, it's at a repair shop getting a new motor in it. Apparently, after I went home, they changed the oil, and when they started it up, it threw a rod through the side of the block.
Marine application, beautiful. No hills out on the high seas. -
Other cool stuff you can do also. I had a 238 making 300 and pulling 45 k payload at 70 with mods with 4.11's and a 9513........but the rad was too small and I burned it up in a hard pull.
The Yamaha will rap 2150 but there's nothing up there to pull with. 2 cycle power band is tight, you need close ratio gears and steep rears. Yamaha's bite in the dirt too .
It's a constant speed motor...doesn't like up down...last forever behind a generator. -

There's a '79 FLC with one under the hood on craigslist here in TN. I'd grab it if I had some playin' money right now just to be different from the Pete crowd.
flc120 Thanks this.
