well im heading over to check out the truck now, he added to batterys and got the truck to start but it will only run for a couple seconds then it cuts off?
what could this be from? im on my way now to see if I can figure the problem. he says it has fuel and emergency cutoff isn't pulled out, so what else would make it just cut out?

air in the lines. grab some fuel, openthe fuel filter fill it up and it SHOULD run longer. but make sure you check the rack FIRST
-
If you are using ether to start it, ( which you almost have to use on those) it runs, then dies, I'd bet the pump lost it's prime. I believe, an old Detroit pump won't prime itself ( actually suck the fuel out of the tank) and on the Detroits I dealt with, like the ones that ran out of fuel, I would pressurize the fuel tank, not a lot of air, just enough to get fuel to the pump,, and see if it stays running then.I feel your pain,,,,old Detroits (shiver)

Yep, prime the fuel system and see what happens.
And where's the pictures?201 Thanks this. -
I went and checked out truck how on earth would i be able to prime the fuel tank? Thru the vent fitting on tank?
When i get it running with the ether it will only run on the ether, you can tell its not pulling fuel. We pulled off the fuel filter and it was about 3/4 of the way full.
Also on the dash theres a lil t handle looking choke im guessing wen you pull and push it im not sure which way its supposed to be in or out so that engine can run cable goes to same box looking thing which throttle linkage goes to so im guessing its a cutoff of somesort.
How do i get this thing started -
That's probably a compression release. It has to be all the way in for the truck to start. If you get it running, try turning off the key. If it keeps running pull out the handle and see if it stops. If so, there's yer answer. It could also be a manual throttle control. Step an the gas and pull it out it should keep the engine at that speed.

Prime the system. Without a priming pump it will take a long, long time. All the air has to be out of it. To pressurize the fuel tank you have to use air pressure applied at the vent, and crack the line at BOTH filters until fuel comes out, one filter at a time, starting with the primary then moving to the secondary. The primary should be the closest to the tank.
The chrome knob on the dash could be (probably is) the "manual cruise control" which just more or less keeps the throttle in place.
The "Emergency Shutoff" usually has red around it somewhere, but with either one it needs to be pushed in.
On the blower there is a 'lever' that is used to re-set the Emergency Shutoff. It has a 'cam' mechanism easily identified and easy to see when it's re-set. But, if it were pulled you'd be getting a lot of black smoke, UNLESS you aren't getting any fuel, which is probably the problem. -

Sez who? I'm just trying to help. I've seen plenty of trucks with compression release setups.
