I'll give you mine. The newer engines sound like they're running underwater, because of the #### EGR system. They're putrid sounding shadows of their predescessors, such as the E-6.

Hey, JoeMech, what do you think of the Western Star (before the freightliner buy-out) or the Marmon trucks? What about Brockway or Autocar? I'm sort of biased towards the Star for OTR or the Brockway for construction-type work. Being as Mack owned Brockway, I assume those husky trucks had/have Mack engines.

I agree on your view of the KW. When I drove one of those, all the brown, wood-like trim on the dash made me feel like I was driving a mobile home whose walls were covered in that cheap wooden paneling.
I drove a Pete once for an outfit out of Ontario. That truck was gorgeous inside. It's too bad my paycheck for the company wasn't gorgeous. Actually, that paycheck looked like Medusa. I turned to stone when I looked at it.

72, but we lack horsepower. In order to make any time with such a machine you have to run wide open in the flats to make up for what you lose on the hills.

It's a 379 Pete and it will do whatever I want it too. Does'nt mean that I drive balls to the wall everywhere I go. I drive according to traffic and conditions.

    Freightliner FLD 120 2001 (built on a century frame).12.7 Detroit, A ratio 10 speed.

Will do about 77 on the level with a decent pulling trailer 1680 rpm. runs hilly terrain best wide open.

I hate that trans I had a straight 13 before and i could average the same speed on the hills even though that truck was governed out at 69.5.

Most drivers assume that if your truck is'nt governed to run 65 or less that a driver will speed excessivly and thats just not true. In the past I have had brokers tell me that if I could get a load there by a certain time than there would be an extra 2 or 300 bucks on the rate, and maybe a time or two I bit, that was a different time. With fuel prices as they are now it just does'nt pay to run like that. Most of the time I'm cruising at about 70 to 72mph. Between San Antonio and El Paso on I-10(speed limit for trucks is 75mph) I may from time to time do 80mph if the load pays really well. As far as tire wear, proper air pressure will aleviate alot of problems.
