a lot of those instructors were like that back in the day. did a lot of things with students you couldn't get away with these days. I had one of them too. always made sure his lessons drove home the consequences of not being prepared or being stupid.
flew over to newberry from greenwood once. I've got maybe 5hrs in but a natural in the airplane and patting myself on the back because i'm 10ft from planting it squarely on the numbers when he yells 'deer on the runway deer on the runway' lol snapped me out of my self congratulatory arrogance and I shoved the throttle up, got it reconfigured and staggered off the runway dancing on the pedals, barely into the white arc on the airspeed and got it off the ground and looked over at him and he's laughing like hell. there was no deer on the runway. he just said 'son, you're good but don't ever start thinking you're good. always be prepared for what you aren't prepared for' i'll admit he got me good. my knees were shaking so bad I could hardly fly the thing for a good 10 minutes after I got it back in the air.
went to gsp once to get some tower experience. first time i'd been away from my home area and had to change frequencies on the radio. we had headsets but he also carried a handheld. about 20 miles out he says he'll leave it to me and not say anything unless he needs to and flips the mic up on his headset. i'm doing my radio calls, getting setup on the approach back into greenwood, but notice he's using his handheld. I can't hear him with my headset on. he lets me turn final at about a mile out and says 'you gonna land on top of that plane or are you going to put your radio on the right frequency and try again?' I look down and there's somebody a couple hundred feet below us on final, another instructor and he'd been talking to him on the handheld the whole time. i'd for gotten to put the radio back on the Unicom freq for greenwood after getting released by the gsp tower
always turned the engine off and took the key and held it for engine out drills. said if it ever really quit I wouldn't be able to just turn it back on again. made choosing and getting set up on a landing spot a lot more critical lol he'd let me get to within 100 ft or so of the ground before he'd give me the key back to refire it and climb out.
I miss that guy. he was a tough old ####### but he made me a much better pilot.Picture.Taker, HeWhoMustNotBeNamed, mountaingote and 8 others Thank this. -
