Running produce to Alaska

I'm ready to go just for that reason there alone, lol

 

I'd like to find a reason to go again

 

I used to work a lot of off-road, criss-crossing the countryside in NE BC, up to around the first 400 miles of the Alaska Highway. On some winter nights I used to pick up KOMO AM out of Seattle and one from Salt Lake City pretty clearly.

 

Alot of the alcan highway now has phone service, there is some spots that dont and there are a few that run on really old tech which alot of phones dont support anymore. But for the most part its coverd, its also nice to have just you and the highway. Depending on the time of year it can be hours if not more before you see a oncoming truck or car.

 

You never need a reason; just time, desire, and resources.

 

I've driven the Alaskan Highway twice, in both directions. The first time was in the mid 70's to go be part of the crews building the pipeline; I was going to fly people to and from all kinds of places. The road then was a superb example of a well-designed, engineered, and maintained gravel road. The little Honda car I had was able to travel at very high speeds (for it!) without my ever being close to losing control.

The trip was done in February and because the road was gravel, there were no potholes. That is no longer the case and wasn't on my last trip down in May 2007. In my view, it's a much worse road now. And the construction/repair...made me want to kill a beast. Perhaps one dressed in orange and yellow...

 

Yukon likes yer fuel tax money, but they won't spend any on the highway, especially west of Destruction Bay

 

Then you cross into Alaska and it is a completely different road. Two trips to Alaska ago I flew up there and worked night shift on two trucks and trailers in a parking lot one block south of the Kenworth dealer in Fairbanks. Thought I would get lucky and see the northern lights. It wasn't to be. Heavy cloud cover that entire week. The good thing is working nights up there is the lack of any traffic on the roads when you do have to drive anywhere.
