Hey everyone. I have read through most of the Averitt forums and am stuck with a decision. I just finished CDL school last Friday and have been offered jobs with Averitt and Maverick. I am scheduled for Averitt orientation starting Jan 4th. I am still waiting on an orientation date from Maverick. I really like both companies and am having a very difficult time deciding what to do. I know I can make more money at Maverick initially, but I think Averitt may offer more opportunities in the long run. I am leaning toward Averitt, but really need some reassurance from some current drivers regarding equipment, miles, and such. Any insight anyone can give would be appreciated.

I have always been on a dedicated account so my mile have always been there.
Averitt has good equipment equipped with apus and inverters.
    Averitt has good benefits
also Averitt likes to promote from within before going outside of the company

When I was installing and maintaining phone systems, I only ever dealt with the Averitt Cookeville office and they all seemed reasonably pleasant or tolerable. They are busy all the time. Had to put the wireless phones in Dallas and that was a wonder to work around the forklifts while I was up on a scissor lift.

I can tell you that at the time, they put more money into their trucks than they did their phone system. They were using equipment that they quit making back in the early 80's but it still worked. Looked to me like they were putting their money in the right places at that time.

Now getting rid of that Green Bay avatar may be the best help for you. You know they have support groups for that, Right?:D

Do you want to bump docks and wait at times for hours to be loaded/unloaded or pull flatbed and deal with tarps in all types of weather and be responsible for the total securement of your load. And you really don't know how much you'd make at one over the other, just what the recruiter is telling you.

I appreciate what you are saying. I do know someone that works for Maverick and I know what he makes. So I do have a bit more info than just what the recruiter is telling me.
I am just stressing a bit over the decision. I suppose I should just take a few days, enjoy the holidays, and not think about it. I really don't have to make a decision till next week.

BTW, I applied for the company you drive for, but apparently there are no customers anywhere around Nashville. Paul told me it would be too hard to get me home for my home time. I was pretty disappointed.

Schneider Bulk hires new CDL grads from Nashville. Work there 6 months or anywhere for 6 months then move to A&R Logistics. A driver in Roberston County makes $72K at A&R Logistics and home every weekend. Can take the truck home or drop the trailer at the rail yard in Nashville and bobtail home. Look at the website; you'll probably like what they offer.

I've actually worked for both Maverick and Averitt. I did enjoy Maverick but the downsides to flatbed is of course all that hard work tarping and chaining which is exhausting at the best of times. After spending 2 hours doing all that in 90+ degree weather a few times, I decided flatbed wasn't for me. Maverick has very good training for the flatbed program. Downsides are the trucks Maverick runs tend to bit a bit older and smaller considering that flatbedders generally use midroof. I'm 5'3" and I smashed my head many times in that truck X_x. Another downside for me was, since I was new, it would take me so long to tarp and chain that my 14 would end up running out before my 11, which meant that I wouldn't be showering some nights if I couldn't find a truckstop parking area. Maverick has very few centers for you to park at.

Averitt was fantastic all around. Great training, good trucks, facilities are excellent and it's just all around good. What really sets them apart is the backing school. That saved my skin many times once I was on my own, remembering what my Instructor had taught me. Averitt also has a jackton of service centers and drop lots for you to be able to park at the vast majority of the times you're out running. I rarely hit up the truckstops, saving those for when I ran in an area with out service centers or for when my stopping time put me in-between available centers. Maverick doesn't have one and as flatbedders don't generally back too often, it can be REALLY difficult to get used to the movement of the 10'2" split trailers. You need quite a bit more room to back those especially because since the trailer wheels can't pivot like a tandem.
In the end, of course, it's up to you but Averitt would be a great choice for the newer driver because of how they run their training and how the company is run. I would leave flatbedding for when you have more experience if that is what you choose.

Thanks. This is exactly the kind of perspective and information that I was looking for when I made this thread. I really appreciate you taking the time to write all this. It is very helpful.
