I start orientation tomorrow in Louisville. That will be 4 days. They pay for the hotel plus give us $400. Orientation determines how much training you will need. Since its been a decade since I pulled a tank, I will get 1 possibly 2 weeks of training. That will be fine with me, since my truck can take up to 4 weeks to be ready. It went to the body shop Friday, because of its accident from the previous owner. Then it goes to Peterbilt to get completely checked out, and have any repairs done. After that it goes back to DB Kustoms so they can add some final touches. I will keep you guys updated. Have a great evening.
harlycharly55, stormy379 and LDR Thank this. -
@Rix43 I never did go through with getting the truck through DB. I am not driving trucks currently, and have a job with excellent benefits and pay. I made over $100,000 in 2015, and got to sleep in my own bed every night. There's no way QC can compete with what I have now, but if in the future I find myself back out there, DB is on my list of possible options. Good luck with everything, I will be following your progress and hopefully success........keep us posted!!!

Good morning. That 4 day class was phenomenal. First the 2 questions - fuel surcharge and detention. There is a fuel surcharge (for every dispatched mile - loaded and empty) that is pretty much the same as everywhere else; and we get a weekly email update on the fuel surcharge. Right now it is obviously low. Detention is different depending on customer, but there are no secrets - so you can ask when you accept the load, "does this customer pay detention and how much?". Good enough for me, because in the 4 days of class I found out this company keeps NO secrets. If anything is a surprise it is because I did not ask first.
A lot of the class is going over, and in my case learning, the DOT and CSA rules; along with emergency response for placarded loads and roll over prevention. Not just signing the front page of the little books, watching some gay ### movies, and call it good. We actually learn what is inside those little books, and believe me or not - this class was awesome and the 4 days flies by. We learned more about the true rules of Hours of Service, terrorism, and the PeopleNet (Elog). We were fitted and issued or HazMat suits, boots, gloves, hard hat, face shield, goggles, and respirators. I know reading this you are thinking it is another lame orientation, but I promise you it is not. It is packed with knowledge, passion, and even adrenaline. If you can leave everything you think you know in the parking lot, and pay attention - you will learn you have a ton of bad habits. We also learn the physical make up of a bulk tanker and how to properly load and unload - with air and with pump. Plus we are shown the safest ways to load, unload, hook up and disconnect. After the first day we received and EFS check for $100, and on Thursday we received one for $300, plus we left with $500 of PPE. The PPE is no cost to us, and QC will replace when you need replacements. You will also learn the how much physical training they recommend. 3 days is minimum.
Think of orientation as classroom, and training as hands on. I was assigned 3 days of hands on training, and a couple guys were assigned 12 days (very little tank experience or none at all). You will not be shacking up in a truck with someone. If for some reason you get hung out over night, you will get a hotel room. Remember they are not teaching you to drive a big truck. Every terminal pays training differently - I will get $100 per day.
My training for example - Monday I go to a facility and watch/assist in driver loading the tanker with the truck mounted pump. There will be 2 loads for sure maybe a third, then I am done for the day. Since the facility is close to home, I will go home. Day 2 I will go to a different facility and watch/assist in 2 air unloads and go home. Day 3 same as day 2. My truck is not equipped with a pump, so I chose to spend the majority of my training learning air unload. Even though my terminal is Fort Worth - I am being trained from the Joliet terminal. If my truck was ready, I would go to my terminal for training. If you are coming on as a company driver, you will train from your home terminal. There are almost 100 terminals, and only 2 of those are corporate owned - the other terminals are affiliates. All terminals follow QC rules and regs, so no importance on corporate or affiliate.
Recap - class was phenomenal, and I am excited about training; so I can get to work. I have never been to a company that cares as much as these guys do. The care is sincere and has been evident from the recruiter, to class, to training, to talking to my safety director at Ft Worth. We are allowed to be safe and compliant - plus make good money.
I will keep you updated as I go.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 24, 2016

Was Daryl the orientation dude?
If possible stay away from Safety clean / Clean harbors accounts, it's dirty work that'll kill your 14 hr. Clock.
I'm no longer @ QC because of safety clean.
Other than that my time there was greatharlycharly55 and Rix43 Thank this. -
