Is there any way to avoid OTR as a recent grad?

Alright so, I've talked to a few companies that hire CDL grads..

I interviewed with OD & SEFL. OD told me to wait until spring (I can't wait that long, I have bills) and SEFL hasn't gotten back to me yet in nearly two weeks so I'm fearing the worst (even though I felt the interview went very well)

The idea of going OTR sounds awful (I know what you guys are going to say "You're in the wrong industry if you want to be home...") The thought of going out on the road for 2-4 weeks at a time and only coming home for a few days seems like automotive slavery....

I have all my endorsements and I'm in the Hampton Roads area in Virginia, do I have any options?

Try soda and beer distributors as well as food distribution. OTR does sound terrible and can be but everyone is different. I started OTR then got put on a local dedicated route and after a few months I was dreading it. I would get so sleepy doing the same thing over and over again. I'm now back OTR and loving it. By the way, I have no wife/child obligations so that makes it easy for me.

My wife was otr for a year and half with me. If she can do it hou can. Man up and go otr. Jk. Otr is not bad if you are single. I would look at local delivery or beverage delivery like everyone else said. Also, being in VA construction is probably year around, I would assume, you could drive a dump truck or garbage truck (yeah laugh, buddy mine does it, makes 60k a year. Home every night.) There are a lot of companies out there just got to look. Ask Chinatown on here. Also see if your school hadls career placement services. Good luck.

Any co. that offers you a LTL job before running OTR first should throw up flags. If the current drivers don't want the home every night job something is bad wrong there.

Averitt lets you run SE regional for six months and if a LTL job opens up after six months you are eligible for it. But still refer to my other post.

Getting a CDL sounds exciting however you've got to count your costs before hand do your research/ homework before making the commitment you don't have to do OTR check your local classified for job adds for local drivers your location is another issue if your miles from any major transport company. For day driving i'd not want to be more than 40 miles from any job.

Its unlikely you will get a decent local job without a couple years experience. But, there might be some local craigs list 1099 jobs avaliable.

Another suggestion would be dairy companies that deliver milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. from one plant to another.

In Wichita KS, Hiland Dairy and Bordens are two major dairies that haul from plant to plant, also hauling dairy to the Walmart stores and major supermarkets. Many of those truck drivers have been with those two companies for a number of years. I am not sure if they take CDL graduates or not.

As for me personally, IF I COULD HAVE PASSED THE D.O.T. PHYSICAL, I would like to have been able to go to a CDL school and drive over the road, (OTR), to and from all of the lower 48 states and Canada.

I have never been married and never had any children. I live in a one bedroom apartment which would allow me to be out on the road for extended periods of time.
SADLY and UNFORTUNATELY, both of my parents passed away long ago, father in 1981, mother in 2007. I no longer have parental eldercare responsibilities.
IF I COULD HAVE PASSED THE D.O.T. PHYSICAL, I would TRULY and GENUINELY would be looking forward to those over the road, (OTR), trips.

Good luck to you and your family! God bless you and your family!

God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!
