if and when is only for those that can afford the technologies and mistakes until it becomes cheaper and law. a tax was proposed on oil to pay for a railroad. that'll be the first dirrection to replace drivers and congestion

To me those type of trucks would cause more accidents because the human backup driver is bored from having nothing to do. The driver falls asleep and then the truck makes an error and crashes. No thanks. Just because technology exists or can be created doesn't mean we have to create it.

When they figure out how to have a robot-truck pre trip itself, open trailer hatches, scale in, pull directly under a transloader spout that is never in the same place in a dirt lot along side rail cars, watch air bag gauge to load itself correctly, scale out, close hatches, then find a location on a goat path 30 miles in the middle of nowhere, usually muddy as all get-out, assess the situation and find out where put that load, turn around in very tight quarters without hitting any company pickups that are scattered all over the place, back up, hook up hoses, fire up the PTO, and keep a close eye on the gauges and regulate air pressure in the trailer while unloading and constantly working the valves as needed, then I'll start my new job as assistant to the assistant head janitor at the local elementary school bus barn.

If autonomous vehicles are so far off (this is what they thought about mapquest three years before it came out), cell phones and personal hand held computers, then where are they going to find the 800,000 drivers they need right now and the one million they will need after that?

I am sure at some point driverless vehicles will be in use, but I think before that happens it will require technology that has not been invented yet to make it safer.

Lots of things wrong with that statement but let's assume for the sake of argument what you are citing is true ...

Why do you think we're having this huge debate over illegals and how many we should allow to flood into our nation? Wake up man! Hint. It's not about "having a big heart" and it's not about filling "vacancies". It's about cheap, never-ending labor in a job that chews through people at unreal rates. Nothing more nothing less.

Should also note that truck driving is one of those jobs that absolutely can NOT be replaced with "robots" [to reduce labor costs]. So keep this in mind.

I swear it wasn't too long ago that we had this discussion. I already said it once... when the machines become self-aware, they're gonna kill us all, and we'll be effectively replaced at that point. FFS, haven't any of you people ever watched the Terminator movies?

I wonder if anyone would notice another 800 thousand plus trucks on the road looking for.parking and freight.

The shippers would love it. Can you imagine the cheap rates? And furthermore, this would demand "contract drivers" (zero liability/cost labor .. Think "rent your truck" and "lease-purchase" "opportunities") become even more the norm.
