My employer continues to insist that pay and routes be based on Google maps, but we know that Google maps has no capability to generate routes that exclude roads that we may exceed size and weight restrictions for, even though adding that capability in would not be a monumental task.

I was driving between Weed, Ca and Coburg, Or and knowing that the I5 had a significant segment that was a mountain pass if I had chosen going via Roseburg. This meant a significant amount of time spent either climbing and being unable to maintain speed, or descending and working to make sure to control speed to keep from going out of control. That being said, I used the US97 and went through Chemult instead. I got in trouble for driving the extra miles and told that I made a mistake, even though I got to my destination safely, without incident, and in plenty of time simply because I was better able to maintain a safe pace. I drove the route south using the I5 and it took at least an hour longer to go between the two places, even when empty.

    How is that a mistake?

That being said... what DO you use Google maps for?

Satellite views of what I'm about to pull into, seeing what side of bldgs to go in so I'm facing the right way or possibly alternative ways in/out. It's awesome as long as you don't use it for it's intended purpose.

I use it for getting an aerial view of places I have to deliver to that I haven't been to before. This aids in the decision of whether to go in backwards or forwards.

The latest was looking at a residential street to see whether or not it had a cul-de-sac at the end for turning around. It didn't.

I like Google maps' interface and its usually pretty reliable.. Problem is that its reliable for cars… It will run yu right thru a residential neighborhood.. I see your concerns- even though I really like some things about goggle maps

I also did this too. I would then tap go on my Garmin GPS and let it route me in.

Quick rough calculations to figure distance between here and there to plan your breaks. Much faster than fooling with any gps device

Google maps Traffic is far superior to any gps traffic

Plus it's fast and easy to use and offers spell suggestions and shows multiple route options and is "smarter" then any gps except for truck limitations

    dancecanyon and tow614 Thank this.

With my nav, I set my final destination, then a stop between hour 4 and 5 for a meal break. Before I roll from that break, I set a stop within my last drive hour for my 10 after rechecking my remaining hours.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.
