There is no additional hour gain as it only prolongs the previous 14hr shift since the 8/2 is actually a 10hr divided with special rules showing an 8 in the sleeper and a 2hr break. If that 2 becomes a 10 it still counts as part of the 8/2 and the 10. You can do it continuously against the 70hr but it was meant for solo drivers to make awkward appointments due to problems like dispatch scheduling or bad weather screwing up your best laid plans like it's predecessor the 5/5 (break 5, drive 5).

It is wise but not illegal to use it between 10s as some authorities don't understand it and it can make you dizzy between day/night confusing your natural clock and the safety/sanity of everyone involved.

Lotta confusion, some right answers in this thread. I'll reiterate the correct answer.

When you take the first sleeper berth, you extend your hours. Coming out of the sleeper berth you had the on duty and drive hours you had when you went in.

Coming out of the second sleeper berth, you reset your clock (with an 8 hour SB and a 2 or more off duty or SB) to the end of the first sleeper berth with the second SB extending your hours. You now have a full 14/11 minus whatever you used between SB 1 and SB 2.

Again with Sleeper Berth 3. You take that, you reset your clock to the end of SB 2, SB3 extended it, so you now have a full 14/11 minus whatever you used between SB 2 and SB 3.

Don't get caught doing that on paper logs by an ignorant cop or safety manager.

A lot of people only worry about their 11 hour clocks when split breaking. But you have to consider the 14 as well. Basically if you used 7 hours of your 14 and 6.5 hours of your 11 then take an 8 hour sleeper, you have 7 hours left on the 14 to complete 4.5 hours of drive time. Then you'd have to take a 2 hour break but would then have 7 hours to complete 6.5 hours driving.

Check out logbook dot com and download the software and play around with the graphs to see what happens.

lol, my company popped me for log violations due to doing 2 8 hour sleeper times in beween driving, they said I never completed a full 10. I loaded my paper logs graph for graph into some logging software and emailed it to safety and they finally removed the violations from my record.

Exactly. Glad you work for a company that knows how to use the del key.

I used to mark and name the beginning and ending periods as well as the leftover and renewal points just in case I had a hack reviewer see it.

Those years I had logs that read like a sideways newspaper article...

This works too as the 2 hour break can also be sleeper not just off-duty.

I think some of the confusion is seeing the previous shift hours carried over and the new shift that merges with it after the 2 hour break.

The only part that is mandatory is the 8 hour sleeper and a 2 hour break that can overlap any other break. I got in the habit of logging actual 8 hour sleeper birth times on my 10 hour just in case I had to pull a couple when trip planning.

I like my down time so it wasn't like I was abusing it.

I did test it out continuously over weeks at a time and it got weird after awhile in which case a weekend in a fancy hotel or a pick-up in Laredo fixed it up real quick.

Technically we can't run in and grab a sit down meal while logging on the sleeper either so...

Just think of it in football terms. If you take a 8 hour break in the sleeper and they ask you to move right then, Punt.
