Does DEF get stale within a few days?
Maybe the smell goes away or something?
The only times I have had a problem was when it got way too low and the engine was derated because the computer thought I was out.
'Purity' was never a question.
Limiting DEF at truck stops.

For others reading this , I will go over this once more (can not hurt). We have all seen the crystals that form as DEF dries. They are all over the pumps.Running the DEF tank low , once or twice a day the fluid may splash the inside of the top of the tank. Giving it time to dry. Next time you top the tank off those crystals wash away to clog the filter, plumbing and doser . Keeping the tank near full , the fluid splashes the top of the tank about every bump, never giving it time to dry . Not forming crystals that causes breakdowns . Do your self a favor keep the DEF tank full/ or near full. Wiping the end of the hose off is not a bad idea . Only way this doesn't make sense , is to deny DEF is where these crystals come from. Once someone learns this , most people fill DEF at each fuel stop. Hope this helps someone.

It doesn't help me because I have never had a problem with it.
And it is usually less than 1/4 tank when it gets filled.
I can see the reasoning, but my experience tells me otherwise.
And as soon as those crystals fall back into the fluid, they'll dissolve back in to the fluid.
They will not remain like little rocks to clog things up.
And what hose are we to wipe up after? The filler nozzle?
What would that do?Last edited: Aug 24, 2016

Hmm I been filling up once I'm down 1 bar so 3/4 tank, then I fill up. Since that day almost all the truck stop's Def was frozen and I barely made it to the yard with flashing red light, I been always filling up def.
KillingTime and scottied67 Thank this. -
But even that problem is less now than when DEF was first introduced.
The truck stops know of the freezing problem and take steps to avoid it. -
So before putting the filler nozzle into the filler neck of the DEF tank, wipe off all the crystals to keep your system as pure as possible.
Anyone absolutely interested in maximum purity would only pour in the 2.5 gallon cans of DEF bought from inside the store rather than the bulk pumping DEF that has been in an underground or above ground storage tank for who knows how long and may have who knows what sort of contamination within the tank and the hoses leading out to the fuel pumps.
I suppose it is alright for most trucks to use the DEF pumps as we drive pretty consistently 300-500 miles a day and consume plenty of DEF and replace with pure DEF on a fairly regular basis.
Why do you think these companies don't want you taking more than 2 days off? The DEF will crystallize in the tank and like a ticking time bomb, later on down the road the DPF system will be fouled up.Moosetek13 Thanks this. -
Plus, how hard is it to just fill up every time you fuel? I have a 13 gallon tank on my truck and can almost run a full week on it if I wanted... 3100 miles. We have def in our yards, top off every time, I've never bought on the road. We also get thru our yards a lot though.Moosetek13 Thanks this. -
What is DEF?
