It should be mentioned also that Abilene has driver facing cameras in the trucks. Some may not mind it, but some will, and it should be known so folks can make an informed decision based on how they feel about them.

I hear a lot about these cameras and wonder how they really work ?
Who can access these cameras , are they just looked at if you have a crash or incident.
Do people at the company just walk by a big set of tv,s with all the drivers on it. I have no clue ???

Supposedly they are not monitoring 24/7, but the camera is constantly filming, and only saves footage a few seconds prior to and after an "incident". Those incidents can be a hard braking situation, cornering too fast, or other truck jarring motions such as an accident, or even hitting a pothole. Then the saved footage is sent to a 3rd party location for review and if it's determined that there was a safety issue, it's then sent to the carrier for further review. Some camera systems work differently, however, and I'm not sure how Abilene's is set up.

Now, they say they don't just randomly watch a driver, but when I talked to a Black Horse Carriers driver, he told me that his will come alive for no reason (driving a straight, smooth stretch of highway), so he believes that someone is randomly pinging the camera to take a peek at what he's doing during the day.

Yup... they have them. It bothered me a bit in the beginning but I don't even think about it now.

If they don't mind a driver driving naked through Atlanta I guess I don't mind them watching... (insert laughter here)

Pretty good summation... yes they record 24/7 but if the truck is off so are they.

Any incidents are uploaded in the night and I am fairly sure they can peek in anytime they want or trip a record session manually.

I actually received a big pat of the back over one of my incidents... was in traffic and was cut off and had to hard break which triggered the camera... they saw it as avoiding a very possible accident and gave me an atta boy.

I figure I am a fairly safe and competent driver so if anything is recorded it will normally be to my benefit.

Coming from an office environment I have always had the bosses walking past my door or knowing my web search history of a work computer... I toss it all in the same category.

Yes they have pet and rider policies... best to ask a recruiter for those details as there are some restrictions.

If you don't live close to the yards, you can take the truck home. I am normally parked at a local shopping mall for my short times at home and dropped the truck off at our Wytheville Yard (2.5 hours away) prior to taking my vacation this passed week just because I didn't think the mall would like a truck setting the for 8 days.

Hometime is normally 1 day off for every 6 days out. And they have normally gotten me home when I "needed" to be home and sometimes I have to be flexible if my time home isn't hard scheduled.

I have also taken home time in NC (home), IL (family), and NE (friends)... so they will work with you on location of hometime too.
