Sounds about par for the course. I already had the book, but when I withdrew I was told $65/mo for dues, and I'd stay on as active. I had only one situation where I needed it, delivering sheetrock to a Brooklyn jobsite, so it wasn't worth it for me to maintain at that point.

This is why the union has lost a lot of it's jobs. I'm not saying it's right or wrong but it's the way it is. Those trade shows finally figured out that they could get a non-union outfit to haul much cheaper and that was that. Well that and the corruption that goes on with a lot of the union leadership but I won't go there.

No,not at all.I'll explain to how trade show freight worked.Trade shows are organized chaos. As one show ends, you have to get freight out,so the next show can move freight in,very close timetable. As an exhibitor, you would have so many hours to arrange transportation of your outbound freight, union or non-union,your choice.BUT,when times over, and the bell rings, and you didn't take care of this,as lots of exhibitors don't,it's now the trade shows business to move your stuff out,per trade show agreement.Called FIB,found in booth, has to be done. That's when we would take over as the house carrier. My agent had the agreement with the trade show, and he also had extremely good rates tariffs filed,so we couldn't get in trouble with overcharges. We had trucks waiting, and we would load our wagons. This is called smart business and opportunity.Good agents sniffed this freight out,and smart operators took adavantage of it,called capitalism, always been a fan of it.There was a whole lot more of it before DEREGULATION put this business into the cheap tailspin mess it's in today. The trade show certainly didn't want this to end,as they got a cut of our transportation.
I've spent my entire life in trucking, past 42 years as a leased O/O with my own truck and trailer.Been on both sides of the fence, regulated and deregulated.Know what worked for me,that's why I'm comfortably retired.Made money when it was there to be made, and put some away.Never was the type to lease to someone, and drag their dispatched van around for .80 a mile.Just looked and listened to who was making real money, and always have a niche,or do something specialized, worked for me.
