Leased to a carrier question

The answer is yes you can through trip lease. There are a few hoops to jump through at sni to do that, but if you read your operating agreement in the back, it tells you how to do the trip along with how you can possibly use a sni trailer to pull the load. @CaptainDaveG was doing that for awhile at sni.

 

Some companies will let you. Mostly % based companies with your own trailer in my case. Mostly with o/o with a good track record too. They'll take a cut of it for using thier authority and collecting the money. Usually by the time its said and done your working for less than your normal rate when i did it a couple times it was one time deals when the carrier was dead slow and i was sitting at home. They did it as more of a favour to me than anything else.

 

You have to have your carries permission since you can't see cure a load from a different carrier or broker no one will give you a load without you sending them a proof of insurance,I.e.certificate of insurance..you will never be able to book a load without that and your operating athority #.its really a simple answer some are making it more complicated

 

The company I'm with let's me do it, that why I mentioned it. I've do it so much over the past year, that my dispatcher all ways tells me "let me know if you find anything". Now full disclosure, I do this to get back to their customer freight, but sometimes they don't have anything going in the direction I want to go, so I find and negotiate my own.

I was at a company for over 10 years and I could count on 2 hands and 2 feet the number of times in that decade+ we used a broker. And it was always CHR. They had sales people who found freight on lanes that went out and back. If I had asked them about booking from brokers they would have looked at me as if I was from another planet because hauling broker freight was, for them, a rare thing. If you've been at a company any length of time one ought to know if it was possible or not. A company using brokers often, maybe so.

It's in every independent contractors contract. Helps keep the irs happy by strengthening the ic status. Doesn't mean it's going to happen.
There will be so many hos to jump through, that by the time everything was set up, that load will have been long gone.

Trip leasing is a leftover legal term from the daddy's of regulated commodity operating authority. It doesn't happen today. What does happen, and is much much easier, is having a load from carrier x brokered to your carrier and pulling it. That is very common in the industry.

 

I think some on here are confusing brokered loads and trip leasing,might just be me havnt heard anyone trip leasing in a lot of years maybe closer to 20 years.If you are trip leasing are you tapping the other company name on your truck
