So sad, a parents worse nightmare.
CrappieJunkie Thanks this. -
That SOB needs to fry. There is absolutely no excuse for a school bus to end up like it did.
KillingTime, ReeferOhio, Asphalt Cowboy 33 and 2 others Thank this. -
That's bloody awful.

"Nationally, school buses remain a safe mode of transportation. For example, from 2004 to 2013, U.S. drivers were involved in 340,039 fatal motor vehicle traffic crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA). Of those, 1,214, or just .4%, were classified as "school-transportation-related - "
I love it how they can say that 1,214 deaths is 'safe'.
School bus drivers should be under far stricter standards than CDL holders, - and compensated accordingly.
And - 24 year old school bus driver? Or was he still not passing 12th grade . . . ?Mattflat362 Thanks this. -
what i find crazy, school busses have no dot bumper. i watched a car doin 50 rear ended the bus went under it crushed roof to the seats.
Toomanybikes Thanks this. -
We don't get along very well with school buses. Best to not be around them.
Regarding the fatals, it's terrible. At least they had the best padding etc availible in the new buses these days, you should consider that the old ones back in the early 70's was metal rails everywhere, enough to split your skull. -
It took about a week for two kids to get into an argument and start using the seat belts as weapons swinging them by the straps and hitting each other with the buckles.
They took them all out shortly after that incident.
I'm curious if they ever did end up implementing seat belts in buses.Mike2633, freightwipper and x1Heavy Thank this. -
When I was assigned to a customer in Detroit, there is a first student bus service yard near by. Every morning I would have to get the hell out of the way if these bus drivers. They don't know how to driver let alone know how to be safe. I would get behind a couple of them and a bunch of times they would have no brake lights.
I have more than a few reasons why I keep saying we need to make cdls hard to get, school buses are one of the reasons.Mike2633, milehunter43, KillingTime and 2 others Thank this. -
The body of the bus is high, with no crash guards, so if the bus is struck at speed by a passengers car the car will submarine under the body of the bus. This reduces injuries to the children on the bus. The NTSB finds that the trade-off between injuries of the bus passengers and the injuries to the passengers of the striking vehicle should always be weighted for the bus passengers.
The short of it is the run under at speed is the most common injury accident for school busses. The DOT is going to protect the kids in the bus.
The attitude that if you are stupid, blind, drunk or whatever and run under a school bus you deserve what you get is almost universal.styro, Mike2633, Pumpkin Oval Head and 7 others Thank this. -
Ive had a man do a head on with a 2 door lemans car against our international school bus. the impact was in the front center to left at the steer, bent the bumper into the steer tire, popping it. The man ate the steering column once his steering wheel collasped on impact. I turned my head before the chin hit the high padding which was literally within a few months of introducing into service that year. No seatbelt. The turning the chin away prevented the possibilty of a internal decap at C1 and bottom skull brain pan.
