    Maybe it was better in the 70s, before the deregulation. Not everyone could buy a truck and be MC. I hear all these melancholic stories that money was good for everybody though.

    I hear the same thing - that you had to be really stupid to not make money owning a truck back then. But there was a lot of BS too and probably 99% of the independents on here would not exist if those regulations were still in place. I think old timers who reminisce about regulation cherry pick what they fondly recall.

    Both it comes out to 1.49 a mile if I haul stuff like that regularly I'd be out of business.

    Because IL... everything what goes in Chicago area is cheap. For example dry van rate Chicago to Detroit for 280 miles is $800-900, Detroit to Chicago $300-450.

    It takes more money than just fuel and a truck payment to run up and down the road. The point is, the carrier could have and should have gotten more than they did. Yes they should have asked for more. They didn't because they have no clue as to what the real freight rates are. I also think the brokers want to keep it that way.
