I was curious of what the forum's thoughts are for the best truck to pull 40ft aluminum end dump trailers is. I currently run an old 1995 379 Pete with a Cat 3406e which is getting a bit long in the tooth. I had hoped to be able to easily gather HP, weight and MPG figures online to determine the optimal rig but it has proven harder than I thought. If you were buying a post 2010 truck for this, what would you look at?

Any truck would work, just have to creep when you go off road, truck is a truck an end dump is just a different type of trailer

It depends on the type of end dump work you're going to do. If you're going to be delivering to batch plants and dumping on a pile on a solid level surface, you can get away with just about any truck. If you're going to be getting in the thick, greasy, nasty mud and soft dirt/clay, that's a different story.
You'll need something with the following:
3.90 or higher rear end ration and a slow granny gear (4.11 with a 10 or 13 spd works great but sorta sucks on the highway)
Full locking rears would help greatly but has to have a power divider switch.
    Tall rubber, I prefer 24.5
Smaller fuel tanks for extra ground clearance, No OTR Trucks or anything with fairings as you will tear it up
Shorter sloped hood will help in the city and getting in and out of tight spots
Set back steer axle for a little more maneuverability
If the truck you're looking at has those features, the brand really doesn't matter too much, just personal preference.

    Good luck

What?Mack stopped making the B in 1964, a good old 1980 R model with double frame 44k rears and the twin stick 6 speed. Top speed about 65 against the governor. If you wanted to go retro otherwise spring suspension and lockers 15 or 18 or like my 1985 Mack Superliner has a 10 speed with a Spicer aux from the factory 40 gears are enough to find the right one for the job

379 Pete with a 600 Cummins 13 or 18 speed and depending on where your going off-road I would recommend strong rears with 4.11's.On road 3.55's.W900's are too heavy so you'll lose money imo. Also east Genesis trailers weight a little more than macs but you'll get quality with east.

700 HP 6NZ Cat, spinning a 2250 torque 18 speed, pushing super 40 rears with 3:25 with full lockers does real nice and will get you 6.3 mpg average... Just my 2 cents... IMG_20161026_091119308.jpg
