If you are only going 1mph faster than the truck in front of you, it will take approximately 5 miles to pass. So if you are governed & unable to speed up, is it really worth blocking traffic???

    The math:

    1mph ~= 1.5 ft/s
    1 truck-length ~= 80 feet.

To go from a (small) 1.5 truck-length following distance to a (small) 1.5 truck-length leading distance means gaining 5 truck-lengths (400'). At 1.5 ft/s that means it'll take 4 1/2 minutes to complete the pass which is 4.9 miles at 65mph.

On the other hand, if you simply readjust your cruise control, you'll lose -at most- 11 miles for the day.

    Please be kind

I'm rolling a quick 60mph with Schneider(overspeed on pedal to a hair raising 62), but still occasionally pass other drivers. I'll pass if there are only doing 55 or 56 and I can't see anyone in my mirrors, aside from that I just let the adaptive cruise match their speed till I exit or they do.
I also back out of cruise to let the 61/62mph trucks pass me, if not they seem to always come back over in a rush making the OnGuard system freak out.

So what you are saying is I shouldn't cause a 5 minute inconvenience to you, because it's only an 11 minute inconvenience for me to stay behind the slower truck ?

Yes, a 100% chance of a 5-minute delay to 20 people is much worse than a 10% chance of an 11-minute delay for 1 person, especially when you factor in the chance of one of those 20 drivers developing road rage:

Yep. Pass away. So what if it takes 5 miles, you got 600 to do today. 55 aint gonna cut it.

With that said, I weigh every move before I do it or not do it based on risk reward. If I did move out to pass, it's going to be on a down grade.

I think the issue comes when you have that driver who will slow down to 58 or 59 then if you want to pass...magically you stop gaining ground because he stopped texting or who knows why it happens. But what I do (governed at 62) is pull out of it if I notice you're gaining ground on me. It's just as selfish to make them stay behind you because now...he's gettin road rage and riding off your back bumper.

I can't tell you how frustrating it is to be walking you down over the previous 5 miles and then side by side we stale mate. I know I didn't slow down so obviously if we are on flat land you sped up. How childish does it get

The point is there should be a sacrifice between the two. I've been the one waiting to pass and I've been the one being passed. Common courtesy saves the day

The industry brought that on themselves with the governing. I have no tears for them stuck at 60 or whatever. That was one of the reasons wife and I went team, to bypass the limits of solo trucking and put away 1500 miles in 30 hours or less day in and day out without stopping.

And this obviously isn't an owner operator problem. It's a company driver issue. There should be something taught in training. Along the lines of if he was movin fast enough to get past your tandems let him by. Yes it's 1mph faster but still faster. Brake tap and 5 seconds or so off the throttle and you two likely won't see each other after the next half hour if that long. I do it everyday

All of us don't have that option yet, it's not sympathy it's courtesy. We'd all like a 75 mph truck but you gotta run the miles and save the quarters to get one
