    Ok but you really havent answered my example question with a trip from Vancouver to Edmonton.

    Would you be paying for those addition 20 hours incurred in that trip on top of the regular hours worked?

    I would say he did answer it. Was the driver working? Yes. Therefore, the driver gets paid.

    As the person that set the driver's rates in our company, I can tell you that we paid for virtually everything. Our drivers were paid percentage, but if there were breakdowns, delays, etc., we paid hourly. Due to the fact our drivers were paid percentage they were well compensated when things went in order, but they were also looked after when they didn't.

    Good companies realize the value of good drivers and the cost to replace them and look after them accordingly.

    Why is being paid by the hour such a difficult thing to understand...?

    If one driver faces situations beyond his control why shouldn't he be compensated for his time? By the same token, the company knows how many hours on average it takes to complete a job, so it doesn't take long to identify who may be padding hours. Company may not profit as much as expected 100% of the time but it matters more on averages. I'm sure PB has it mathed out to where he speaks of gross driver pay not exceeding 28% as measured on a broader scope than one single trip and likely across each quarter.

    Additional hours ???? Explain what the driver was doing during that time. Haven't got a clue what you mean by "those additional hours", I can get on the computer and check the satellite and tell you how hours, minutes and seconds he drover. How long he stopped fueling, loading, unloading. If you worked, you get paid. If you wait to load because the shipper is not ready, you get paid. (As long as you were on time).

    If you read my scenario of a trip from Vancouver to Edmonton you would see where the 20 extra hours came from. Conditions that are out of the drivers hands. Would you be paying these extra 20 hours that have occurred for the driver on his trip.

    If you do that is great, and I applaud you for doing so.

    Perfect that you can check on the satellite where the truck is at all times, that way a driver couldnt pad his hours, and rip you off saying he was working when he wasnt. I would actually prefer that you did that. That way I can say I was at Kal tire for 2 hours getting a tire changed, or Kamloops scale had me for 4 hours

    Ill break it down a little better

    Truck spun out on the Coq 4 hours delay - Would you pay for this 4 hour delay?
    Kamlpops scale 4 hour delay- Would you pay for this 4 hour delay
    Call out for flat tire on the side of the road 2 hours- Would you pay for this 2 hour delay?
    Auto accident closes highway 6 hour delay- Would you pay for this 6 hour delay?
    Missed unload time 4 hour delay- Would you pay for this 4 hour delay?

    Do you pay the drivers for all hours that occur while making the trip, or do you base it on what the trip should take with no problems or delays along the way?

    driver should be able to get his sleeper berth done with those delays

    wont get paid for sleeping, paid for everything else.

    So there's the catch. You should be sleeping when there's delays. 2 hour delay for tire repair get in that sleeper, 4 hour delay at Kamloops scale you better call those sleeper hours. Gotcha

    if log is legal, cant justify charging customer for sleeping.

    i was sent to a site where a tanker had never been, customer said id be fine, got loaded (all they had was 1/4 load) andi couldnt get out, steep and sloppy, 3 sets of chains still couldnt get out, so slept there waiting for grader to fix road

    next afternoon, grader fixed road and they had more fluid for me, got out...customer charged for all but my sleep, me paid for all but my sleep.

    3 days apart i needed mechanic to come out with laptop for regen and the other time for hydraulic hose burst....6hr delays each, paid for all.

    Do you over-complicate the rest of your life too?

    You asked, @Prairie Boy answered... drivers get paid for all hours worked. It doesn't get much simpler.

    I haven't over-complicated anything. I gave a scenario that most drivers will experience at some point in their career.

    Agreed its such a simple and direct question but yet hasnt been answered by a person claiming they pay for all hours worked.

    So I'll ask again does PB pay for all hours in cured along the trip that is out of the drivers control i(e. Road, scale/inspection, mechanical breakdown delays.) Yes or No?
