Umm. What? Sorry if trying to teach you something is offensive and combative. Enjoy yourself. Good luck to you, but you might want to not attack the next guy that tries to help you. Later gator.

So you taking what I said out of context and inferring I must not know anything except "pay per mile" was trying to help me?? Please help me understand where the "help" was? Cause all I read was Condescension and attitude.

There was no assumption or condescending tone on my part. I'm blunt and I don't sugar coat, however I don't ridicule or insult or get smart ###, unless we become friends. I pick on my friends something fierce.

I'll try again to express the point I was trying to make. It's that important to stop caring about miles. It's all about net profit. Sometime this means running a 1500 mile run, but more often than not it's the 6 to 8 hundred mile runs that pay 2.20 and up that lead to the biggest bank account. The thing you need to look at, with each load, is how much money do you make after everything involved. Miles only get involved in the equation by how much they cost you to run them. That's it. in the long run, low miles high revenue adds up to the most income. your truck lasts a Lot longer, you spend a LOT less on maintenance, from less oil changes to less tires bought, to less brake wear, and so on.

No matter what you do, or who you lease to, i really do hope you succeed at earning your maximum income potential. It's in my best interest that every driver makes the most money possible. The less people pulling cheap freight the better off we all are.

Oh and I really really hate my cell phone and its stupid auto correct. No way I think I'm the best. That was supposed to be "next"

Thank you for this helpful, well thought out post. I apologize for misunderstanding you, I appreciate you taking the time to clarify.

Let me try to clarify my earlier post since I feel like I must have come off the wrong way..... I know mostly mileage, I understand it's not as important as revenue and wasn't asking about it in that context. What I meant to ask was more about the average length of haul to expect on decent paying freight. So that I could know how best to run an operation with two drivers somewhere like mercer, should we decide to go flatbed.

See, currently I do most of the pickups, deliveries and drop and hook, paperwork and run what miles I can, then she takes over for night shift and just drives. It's a system that has worked for us and I was trying to ascertain how it would work best, or how I could make it fit at mercer.

I didn't articulate myself as well as I should have. I apologize.

Keep a few things in mind, one, I don't run teams so I only have so much info to offer you. I do see team loads on the load board, but only pay so much attention to them, just as I do for rgn and double drop loads. I see them and think, well that looks neat and move on to something I can actually load.

There is lots of long coast to coast runs, but most of them are cheap. If I was in your position, I would get with mercer while at orientation and get clearance for the high value loads that require teams and satellite tracking. They don't pay as good as they once did but do pay a little more than regular freight. Unfortunately they aren't consistent, so look at them as a nice bonus when you see one. your meat and potatoes will be made on regular freight. it will be frustrating for you at first cause a lot of our freight is appointment only, they just are not gonna reschedule a crane for you so you can unload a day early. You could avoid this by not taking any loads requiring a crane to unload, but you will leave a lot of loads on the table if you do. Same goes for construction sites. The crew might not even be there to unload you until the original delivery date. And nobody loss or unloads on weekends. I've literally had two weekend puck up or deliveries in the last four years.

Imo, your best bet is to forget you are running team while booking loads. once you get dispatched on a load, call the agent and ask if you can deliver early. And one loaded call the delivery point of contact themselves. Half the time you probably can. That will allow those 900 mile loads to be delivered next day so you can start working the board to get the next good load.
Remember, even if you never get a team load, you will still net more money here than you have running 6k miles a week of cheap mega carrier box freight.

I will keep that in mind. Thank you, I'm actually not looking for coast to coast runs....I only do them here because all miles pay the same and you're chasing miles. California sucks to go to, and if I knew I was never going to have to go, nothing would make me happier than to go buy a new glider 386 rather than an emissions truck.

But I will go, I've learned the more places you're willing to go, the more freight you get. I believe there's a thread here on "excuses". I was taught to think of freight as a pie...and for everything you can't....or won't do, you take a piece out of that freight pie.... too many pieces out and you've got no pie...

I will have some learning to do to work within mercer' system. But I will figure out a way to work best within it. I'll definitely ask about the military loads, my girlfriend already has base clearances because she used to work with military children with special needs, so she shouldn't have much trouble.
