@BoyWander I've been following This Thread that you started from the beginning first I want to say congratulations on the new rig and your new business venture. I'm throwing this post out here because I'm working towards becoming an O/O in about a year's time. But right now I'm researching when trying to obtain any and all information that I possibly can on the steps I would need to take for that to happen. Any device from your self or anyone else that could possibly walk me through some of the red tape and what needs to be done I would greatly appreciate it. Setting up a strong business plan is where I believe I would really need to start any and all help and some of the do's and don'ts on this would be a great help. Thank you all in advance

I know I posted this earlier in this thread but for Mad Monkey I think this is worth reposting:

May I throw .02 in the hat. Hope so cause here it goes.....

Not just bc of e logs, even tho that is a big part, I prefer older trucks and here is why. Whether you get a cummins N14, cat 3406, Detroit 12.7, they all have good and bad to them, they are more reliable, easily fixed, and just plain simple to work on. My preference is the N14. Cummins still supporting them for one makes parts availability easy. Even tho I have a 379 and love it, I suggest finding an old Freightliner FLD120 for $3000-$5000 and fixing her up. Old Petes are just too high dollar. For under $40000 total investment you could have a very reliable road ready truck with cheap payment. IMO, Volvo, especially new ones, with the high dollar purchase price are so proprietary that you have to go to a shop to work on them. Warranty may cover some cost but not the lost revenue. I would have never made it starting out with $2500 + monthly payments on tractor only. Hell my truck and reefer together were $1100 a month. I'm still running the same Pete, my first truck purchased. It has gotten me thru the hard times, and never let me down.

As far as Red tape. Join OOIDA for nothing more than they will help you every step along the way. They also have educational seminars on their website. Watch them all. It's a good start. There is so many things, it's hard to post them all here. It would be a small novel.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you

Hey thanks a lot brother I appreciate you taking the time especially because you had mentioned that you already thrown out a similar post on this thread. I must have missed it anyway thanks again for the good advice I plan on being the company driver for a while and taking my time entering the waters so the owner operator end of it. Yeah I've stepped in it one too many times in my life so I just want to make sure that I'm going about things the correct way you know I just get so tired of cleaning Sh@# off my boots but I'm still watching where I step thanks again hope that Pete holds out for you

One thing to think about....as you are a company driver, if you decide to find an older cheaper truck to fix up, if you were to find the right truck before you are ready....trust me it can take a long time to find the right deal on the right truck...you could purchase it, keep working as a company driver, and work on the truck as time and money permits so that when you have it done and are ready to go, it won't be such a big chunk of money all at once. Also try to do the work yourself so that you are familiar with the truck.

My OOIDA membership stuff came in the mail today. I got two thick gold stickers I suppose I'm supposed to stick on my truck somewhere.

Truck coming from Webasto tomorrow or Friday. Another $2500 spent. Money seems to come and go quickly when you're dealing with more of it.

Since I told my boss I'm gonna try booking my own loads starting Monday, I have to start thinking about my strategy. Where do I go from Flint, MI? Been studying the hot market maps.

I keep thinking in my head that I should go to the best market and try to get a high rate to FL. I don't know why I keep thinking I need to go to Florida. Maybe because it seems simple. Good rate there, crap back. As long as it averages, it's fine - and I think ok, I know what I'm gonna get out of FL. So that's one piece of the puzzle that I do know. If I just go from midwest to midwest, and stay in certain part of the country, I'll have no idea whether this load from point a to point b is any good. I don't have that information, so I guess I feel I need to work with the information I do have. Maybe that provides a good starting point. I can make a decision when I have the information - it's the unknowns that keep me in gridlock. But all this information will come in time.
