I need some help please. I am currently in the market for a truck and one that I am considering is described above. It has just under 1,000,000 miles. If I proceed further, I will be having it checked out (ECM dump, oil sample, dyno, etc.). The engine has not been re-built, but supposedly runs and drives good. Obviously, having it checked out will tell me a lot more. I am just curious whether this year/model/engine/transmission combo is known for issues, etc. I am not familiar and have no experience with Caterpillar engines. I do like the fact that it does not have DEF.

Thoughts or considerations? (Not interested in debate on manual vs. auto. I'm just curious about the reliability or lack thereof of this combo.) Thanks in advance for your feedback.

The 2007 Cat is just before Cat went down hill trying the new and improved lol. It all depends on how the truck was maintenanced. It is close to 1 mil. You looking at rebuilding it very soon. Caterpillar is strong motor. I have the 3406E "97" edition it has served me will. Buying anything used is a risk without a warranty. I would get a honest report on the condition of the truck so you know what you are in for.

As an owner who bought a 40k truck and has had 15k and over a month of lost days in 16 months I suggest you read this:
    • Cat Acert 20k for platinum oh
    • Also twin turbo equals more issues, equals bucks
    • Auto trans equals overhaul necessity
    • 387 read the mechanics threads on electrical problems, they like the 386
    • Personally I wouldn't go near another truck that has dpf and also wouldn't do the Acert unless I could afford the Platinum and also change the wire harness to 6nz, reprogram the ECM, go single turbo.
    • If you aren't going to California go get a used glider
    • Everything I mentioned is mainly the engine, there are the other major systems to consider as redo for a million mile truck
    • Find a mechanic you can trust and save the dealership runs for the complicated
    • Go find a truck with an overhauled engine and tranny with good rears and drives. Preferably with about 50k on the OH so the bugs are worked out.
    • Tire costs will kick your budget .
Be patient, salesman have no interest beyond dillars.

Be tough, get all maintenance records, if they can't provide ,,,walk the effe away. Spend the money on the online NADA. To get true value.

    Good luck,
    Kevin

Real close to overhaul time. Also 387's aren't worth much used, so if price is right, and your prepared for overhaul go for it. To me that is a $10000-$12000 truck at best. Maybe not even that much. Cat overhaul at shop going to be $25000+.

Forgot I also have the Premium 2000 warranty and still had that extra cost.

Any warranty had better have 2 years ALL systems included.

Can you afford a rebuild? Eventually the dang thing will need a major overhaul....the new engine will not solve the other issues likely to crop up on a used truck as parts fail on the auxiliary systems. brakes, tranny, differential...etc etc

This truck doesn't use DEF so I assumed no DPF. Am I mistaken?

Early Emission Control Units arrived on the scene around 2008 and had DPF but did not use DEF. By 2010 all the new trucks were fitted with that extra tank for DEF.
