7.1 is good for new truck with that can speed. After breakin you will be close to 8 mpg with that can of weight and if you drive close to 60 mph it will be almost 9mpg.
Finally got my own truck

I've been thinking of going reefer team. I have a friend I trust that has done reefer for years but his marriage is troubled ATM and that's why he's not otr right now. Would be neat to try something different and I've teamed before, just haven't done reefer stuff.
-
You'll get much better rates doing that especially on longer hauls. Dry van really sucks for half of the year. It doesn't get any better as a team either. It is what it is until demand is high.

oil is picking up so that bodes well for freight when all the drivers go chasing the oil patch jobs again.

Is the owner where you're leased at OK with you pulling a reefer? Reefers are not cheap. And the freight can have its own set of headaches. If I was in your shoes I'd just try to get into a good rythm doing what you're doing now until you get on a more stable footing.

Yeah he is keen on the idea of having a reefer team, but he isn't really keen on the idea of outright purchasing a trailer for it in case it don't work out over the long run. But leasing one is an option. Just in the idea stage for now.

Took today off in Columbus to get my reset. I unloaded Sunday night. I needed a 34. Only had 7 hours to work with to share between two days. So I took it, probably good to take it on a Monday. Looking at the boards, Columbus seemed dead today. CRST had 8 trucks here at this PFJ sitting around all day. 2 of them I suppose found loads and left.
I found a table tennis club here in the Columbus area, actually right by OSU. They play every day at 17:30, so after I finished my laundry, got a haircut, and took a shower, I dropped the trailer and bobtailed up to where this club is, and got to play with some friendly, welcoming people. Good competition, too.
I've been playing table tennis for quite a few years, and it's neat to be able to play in different clubs around the country. I've played in Harlingen, TX (near Brownsville) a few times when I had a route out there, San Antonio, TX once, Wichita, KS a few times, and now this one. If I get out this way again on a weekend, and have a day, I'll come play here again.
Not sure where I should go from Columbus, but I'm thinking Florida, if I can get at least $2.50. Anything less and I'll pass on it. I'm not getting my hopes up, but you never know. I remember last week Columbus and Cleveland were really hopping last Tuesday and Wednesday, let's see if it comes alive again this week. Last week I averaged $1.41/mi all miles loaded and empty, which is terrible, but I still made a bigger paycheck than switching trailers.
I can see why a lot of O/O will bring rates down, because yeah you CAN make $1,800 profit a week on cheap-ish freight, if you got your truck paid off and don't care about putting aside money for a new one when the current one dies. But they don't think of that. I have no intention of settling for $1.50/mi if I can help it. The goal is to average $2/mi and if you're thinking of buying a truck and doing dry van, this should be your goal, and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. I am seeing how one can start to become complacent and just "take it" rather than fight for the good money, but that kind of thinking isn't successful thinking. I'll take $1.50 average if I have to when it's slow, but when the markets get better, and I have choices, you bet your britches I'm gonna shove $3+/mi to bad areas down TQL's throat, and if they don't wanna play ball, *click*. Why should I just give them that money, when I deserve it more? No way. If the money is there, I'm gonna insist on it when I can and should. Why should I sell myself short? I owe way too many #### Benjamin Franklins on this truck to do that to myself.
Speaking of which, Cresco Capital of Lone Mountain took $2,595 from my account today.

Ouch. That IS you mortgage for the next 60 months.
But, it's a new truck with a Mfg warranty that nobody else has used and abused. The alternative is buy an old truck with questionable reliability and proceed to dump a ton of cash into that you'll never recover. There's no right or wrong answer, just two flavors of poison.SavageSam, Loose Leaf and Lepton1 Thank this. -
Before you jump into team reefer you better have solid and I mean solid freight lined up. You think the brokers fib on Van side.....wait until you have a 8 pick produce load that has to be 1000 miles away and you can't get an appointment time and they won't FCFS you. Or better yet you get sent to a FoodLion and spend 30 hours getting unloaded. Just saying...
Be Safe Out There
