I used to visit his message board years ago. I recall when he started building that "Signature truck". The original use for that thing was that he was going to drive it himself under his own authority. But then he chickened out and sold it to "someone who is doing very well with it". Well now we know how that turned out.

People think outside the box ! You really think the 855 was the only engine Cummins made ?

Your implication was it was in the late '80's. Was it an L10?

Rutherford was always bragging about his fuel mileage to get his kool aid drinkers all starry eyed. But he never advertised he was pulling ~20K worth of Fedex parcels in the southeast with a single axle truck.

I didn't say that is a rule I live by. I said there is a factory plaque that says it. I'm guessing they are using the Break Specific Fuel Curve that says the average engine will get the best economy at this rpm. In my own experience driving this truck and my Peterbilt with a 470 DDEC III, that pulling a hill under 1350 is not a good idea, and shifting this one, even bobtailing, and picking it up under 1200 is not a good idea.

Jeff, the guy who bought the signature truck said he pulled it down to 1200 on hills. From what I have been told and from my experience, that is not a good way to get fuel mileage.

Running empty or very light 1200 is perfect on mine. But it's a ddec iv. And I'm betting a lot less drag. Problem tho if I'm empty I'm either headed to get loaded or headed home...and fuel economy is not my primary concern in that situation so I'm turning 1450 or 1500.

Correct . 1986 , and yes the L10.Trucks were made with a certain job to do . We were mail contractors . NC to FL so yes SE with light loads . Pulled about every fuel mileage trick we could come up with . Even ran motor oil in the transmission instead of gear lube. Took some doing but got Eaton to approve it. Putting 1000 miles a day on daycabs , every penny you save adds up. But like I said they were designed to get better then most loaded going up Black Mountain as if it never ended . What is madding is now we have computers on the engines , sensors out the wazoo , every truck today SHOULD be getting what we were way back then . MVT is about the best fleet out there today as far as MPG . But besides a few aero bits , they have not done anything else then we did back then (if they figured out some of the things we did) . Well one they can not use , it would cause wide based singles to distroy them selves.

You said concentrated max loaded and now say light mail loads.

    Anyone else catch that?
