That's one of the "scary" things about switching now. We were all gung ho about switching & weathering the low rates storm for 6 months because we were hauling for crap already. Now we've found some good rates lately (for van, compared to what they were) & it's like crap. Of course we don't really have any choice but to switch since SNI came out with their new collision baby sitting system requirement for trucks now. So I will just bank what I can until we make a move. LOL.

I didn't know you had those pages in your atlas. Try not to get lost. LOL
I think rates are on the rise. I haven't loaded anything under $2 in a bit. I was on the van board earlier and saw several loads at $1.60 - $1.80 on a thousand miles and over $2 on shorter stuff. Of course I saw some sub $.85 loads too. Ouch.

Van rates are not really good. I am on my second week, struggling to learn the lanes. My truck is paid for and I don't have many bills so I am able to sit.
Mercer van freight is about 50/50 customer/broker freight. So, usually half of the stuff you see on the board is not really available; its brokered freight that was entered by agents and never gets pulled from the board until someone calls on it. It requires me to rely a lot on my coordinator more than I would like, which is extremely frustrating, as I prefer to just point and click. I'm a bit antisocial. LOL
I was told before I started that van rates averaged about $1.30, and while I never planned on being average, with the amount of deadhead I am seeing, that rate might hold true. However, I'm still learning the system.....

We have plenty of the sub $1 a mile loads but we've been averaging over $1.40 a mile including dead head lately. I know it's still cheap freight but for van it's an improvement.

So the $1.30 you're averaging is including dead head?

That call before dispatch thing doesn't necessarily mean it's a brokered load. The majority of customers no longer exclusively use one trucking company. They send out a load list every day/ once a week/ whatever, to many carriers and brokers. The first one to confirm a truck gets the load.
