no offense was meant hitchicker, if it was taken that way i'm sorry I just meant it wasn't for me. If it's something that makes you happy doing, than by all means have fun with it. good luck to you.

I wanted to make it clear.... that no one who responded to this thread ever offended me in any way. Recently, in one of my posts here I commented about some people who responded to posts from a long time ago that I caught some flack over. Those guys just like to push your buttons, the way some drivers do on the CB by making outragous remarks. Most people here are great, and have some interesting posts and responses.
Just wanted to set the record straight.

It's simply called driveaway. I know there are a couple people that I see on these boards that post on it. It's not a high traffic group, but interesting to read the reports that people post and where they've been.

In 2007 'a friend' went to orientation in Montreal, Canada, for Drivestar. They are also in Ontario. They ship OLD truck tractors to American ports, for export overseas, i.e. Africa, the Middle East. They also ship new garbage dumpsters to a variety of receivers in the USA. They were willing to take an American CDL or a Canadian commercial Class A. You are paid by the mile. But on the road, you pay entirely for your own fuel, and you are NOT reimbursed. Your pay is supposed to cover for it. Speaking to drivers going through their terminal, I found out that yes, the company pays an allowance for your basic hotel, because the vehicles you drive generally do not have sleeping bunks. But many of their drivers put their sleeping bags on the floor or the driving seat (and there are often no passenger seats) -- and THAT'S how the drivers make some cash clear above their expenses. It is pitiful. Sometimes the OLD truck tractors literally fall apart on the road. Transportation back to Ontario or Quebec is guaranteed by bus or plane or car pool. They go through a lot of drivers and hire many right out of school. Canadian driving school graduates do not have as many choices for employment as their counterparts south of the border. My 'friend' walked away from orientation after doing the math.

Drivestar is run by the family of the guy that used to be the national fleet director for the company I drive for. When I found their website at www.drive-star.com, I was surprised to see a picture of 4 of our trucks, decked, in their main logo. They would fit into the category of "junk that can fall apart on the road" LOL

This sounds very much what my older sister and her husband were doing. They would transport (drive) bucket trucks and sometimes motor homes from location to location. They had a little pick-up truck they would tow along with them for their return trip home or to their next pick-up. Not sure if it is the same but reading your post it sounds as if it is? She and her husband were quite happy doing this. I don't know exactly how much they made but I know they owned two homes. One was paid off and the second was mortgaged. (they recently divorced, sis took paid house, hub got mortgage lol) I know my sis wants to go back to doing this but doesn't want to do it alone. I do know they took as much time off as they wanted (sometimes weeks at a time) and still seemed to have plenty of money.
Actually, not knowing trucking and Expedite trucking were different was what got us interested in trucking. They had lots of off time and lots of money . Sis said we had to have 2 years OTR before we could do this type of driving? They worked for a company out of MO.

I am considering taking a job with Quality Drive Away headquartered in Goshen IN. I live near the Volvo Truck plant in Dublin VA and the pay seems ok. Does anyone have any experience with this company in here? From what I've read here I may reconsider until I have gathered a few more facts on them. I have thought it would be convenient since I would be driving/delivering only new trucks to buyers. Please send any info you have that I can research before I jump any further. Thanks :biggrin_25525:

I worked for one drive-away company out of Trenton Ontario, and they were pretty fair to work for. We moved a lot of hydro and Bell trucks around the province and some regular runs to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where International makes their school buses. Any Int'l bus you see started out in Tulsa.
We'd leave Trenton, go to Tulsa, pick up a bus, head for Ft. McMurray Alberta, back to Tulsa, then back to Trenton, then deliver the bus to a large distributor north of Montreal.7000 miles, not km. in 10 days.
We towed a van, and while in the van, we'd get a motel room(paid).
When we had a bus we had to sleep in the bus.
Only got paid for miles in the bus. So for 10 days, you'd make about $1100.
Not bad, but no benefits or other perks. And never left to find our own way back. No greyhounds either.

    freebird Thanks this.
