My point is you need to look outside the van. Reefer LTL freight pays over 4 per mile. Tanker work which I do pay me around 3 per mile for all miles. But your truck is to big for tanker work plus to tall. Melons coming out Florida and potato pay 3 mile going to Canada in a dry van with vents. Flat which I would not do steel loads out of Delta OH over 3 per mile. None of these company charge for trailers they take 25% of load but the rates I stated are after there take. Then the only expense you have is a truck payment. My whole point is it very hard to make a buck on load board some do but most don't. It my felling you are paying the company you work for a lot for what you are getting in return.
Finally got my own truck

Will it be an uphill battle for him? yes, of course, it's the nature of trucking
Will maintenance (NOT REPAIRS) bills show up? yes, of course, it's the nature of trucking
Will breakdowns occur? yes, of course, it's the nature of trucking....but guess what, he has a new truck, with warranty. While it may not cover everything @ 100%....its better than getting a 750K mile truck that's been beat up
All he can do is be a conscientious O/O...and hopefully come out ahead....keep eye of cost side of the equation, adjust accordingly, as revenues go up & down.
Also, while his payment may be high...it's prolly for a reason. HINT:....to pay off quicker, and not have a 5-yr burden.
I admire his willingness to share his trials, tribulations for all of us to "critique"....but what I admire more, is his drive to make it happen...and for that, I will say, to @BoyWander ...soldier on brother, soldier on!...but also, make time for yourself....getting burnt out is a modafoka to good mojo. -
I'm going to pm you company that I have close friends making serious coin doing LTL reefer but you must be on time and work and willing to run NE plus they have good back haul no more load boards.

bulldawg trucker and Lepton1 Thank this.

I'm on with Mercer. I pay 900ish a month for trailer payment and insurance on truck and trailer. Eventually I'll own the trailer, I cover repairs on it. But they get 26%. Plates are 1700 ish a year, they pay for Ifta. -

You have some very valid points...and were duly noted. What I meant is that, there may be things that MOST of the people who tend to critique are not PRIVY to....and therefore, may be quick to point out the shortcomings of OP's game plan.
Your comments at the end of what I quoted you above were spot on. OP needs time to have a mental/physical reset, else he'll burn out.
You also pointed out that he needs to cut his costs wrt being leased on...all very good points. -
The whole CPM discussion does not mean anything to me. I look at the gross after fuel weekly amount, that's the number what's important. I did a load yesterday, 82 miles for $600. i don't go around and say that I do $7.5 per mile running dry van
Reefer LTL freight for $4 per mile like you said. Is it 100 miles per day with 5 stops, or 500 miles with 2 stops?
Or your $3 per mile tanker work, do you run 150 miles per day with stopping at 5 gas stations or do you run 2500 miles per week with 4 stops total?Last edited: Mar 18, 2017
