PAY ATTENTION TO THE HILL AND SPEED SIGNS. Gear down. 6% for 10 miles will eat you up. Gear down, stay down. You cannot brake your way down a 10 mile hill. I cannot reiterate this enough. And what looks level can still be 3 to 4% grade and you can pick up enormous amounts of speed (or lose it going up hill)
Supposed to nice this week, check CDOT's website. www.cotrip.org for up to the minute road conditions/chain law, etc.
You must carry chains on I-70 until May 31st. You don't have to use them unless chain law is up, but you have to carry them. minimum 4 singles. They will check.
Colorado puts all their scalehouses at the bottom of the hill. (you'll see i"m not kidding on this)otherhalftw Thanks this. -

Get ready to have the Hell beat out of you and your truck around Georgetown. Don't lose focus, the highway is bad enough it can jerk you out of your lane of travel.

Beautiful drive but do not be fooled with the down grade especially if you are heavy... 2 really good ones I've been through there a few times.. not a lot in the way of parking or truck stops once you're west of Denver, make sure you plan it all out well with your fuel and rest stops etc. note Colorado allows 36000 on tandem axles so if you're playing the edge it under 80,000 game that info can be handy

West of Denver you have a Kum and go in Rifle with truck parking for your 39, just not your 10. You can also stop at the Wal-Mart there for your 10. Other than that you have another Kum and Go as well as an independent between Rifle and Grand Junction.
Don't try to take your break in a chain-chain up area. If you aren't broke down, or chaining you can and will be ticketed. -
Dont go too fast down the hill, you will smoke your brakes.
There is a buffalo viewing area as you climbing the hills, I saw a herd of buffalo there yesterday. Mountain goats, deer are all over those hills so watch out for wildlife. -
Make sure to piss or take a dump before you leave Denver, there are pretty much zero truck services until you get to Grand Junction which is bs...

As mentioned pay attention to the downgrades.
70 is a beautiful ride. Not much of an Interstate highway. As the sign reads. Scenic Interstate highway. Just like all Scenic highways, they are built more for cars than big trucks.
Good luck.
