I was in the same scenario about 4 years ago and that's exactly what I did. I know how bad it sucks but you're going to spend either, or...

Thanks @dngrous_dime and @rollin coal. I really want to hold on to it and just get the new engine instead of going out and getting another truck and starting over with another set of headaches.

I wouldn't put 20-30k in that truck, personally.

I tend to agree because it's a 2010. What's wrong with it? If the motor needs inframing she'll have to put some money into to get it running again or it won't sell.

Peterbilt says there's a hole in the engine block. I guess I threw a rod yesterday. I took care of my truck as well as possible so I don't understand why this happened. I haven't paid it off yet (I bought it November 2015). I put a driver in it last year and he dogged it out pretty bad so I had to put some $$$ into it to get it road ready.

It's an ISX, they are known for ventilating blocks. You're also not looking at an inframe, you're looking at buying a whole engine without a core charge. You'll put $30k in a truck worth $20-25k

Yep for sure. I spent a #### small fortune on my truck over 4 years ago. Way more than it was even worth. It got me several years more service and still going.

That's the choice. Do that and get several years more service out of the truck or part it out. I don't deal with salvage equipment but I can only imagine it'd be like hitting the lottery finding anyone that would pay anything for it. It's just a scrap tractor with a busted motor not worth very much. I chose spend the money on what I knew and stayed in business rather than start over on another unknown used truck.

Either choice will be a money pit. Old trucks eat money. I hear guys brag how they buy an old one for nothing, run it for a few years, then sell at an amazing profit to get another great deal on a different used one. In the real world that doesn't usually happen. Right now the truck is down and time to make a decision. What would you do?

What have you already done to the truck, while you owned it? Moreso, what has a far less likely chance of breaking again within the next 5yrs? Let's spread the $30K bill over 60 months, minus interest for sake of discussion. Is a $500/month engine payment worth it, to stay running? Or would you rather take a gamble on a completely new (used) truck that "might" pop the engine next year???
