My husband and I have been driving for about a year at CFI (formerly conway) they have all the freight we could want. But at around 1.15/mi even with the fuel program our take home is 5500 a week. Curious about switching to landstar or mercer, or even just going under our own authority. Anyone out there have any advice? Not sure whether to rock the boat and try for more money or just sit back and enjoy a good thing.

Ironically, I could have started the same post. My wife and I have been a company driver team for a year with the big orange and are in the process of buying our first tractor and are looking for the right OTR company. I don't think my current employer has the right plan. I've been told that percentage load is a better option than CPM, but really we're just looking for a company that pays well and lets us choose our own loads and home time. We generally don't like to run more than 5k per week anyway so it looks like you and your other half run harder than we do. Really looking to get another year under our belt so we can join Landstar (who I've heard is one of the best for O/O). I wish you both the best of luck. I'll send you info as it comes and hope you'll send us some tips as well.

Just remember $1.15 is$1.15 no matter who is signing the checks. The only way to make good money is to work percentage.

You can make a lot more than $5500 a week as a team on your own.
How ever,.. if $1.15 seems like good money to you,.. then I would suggest you guys learn the market and rates for lanes before deciding to break off on your own. I dont mean to insult you,.. but if you believe that is good money for an O/O,.. then someone has duped you. Personally I hang up and would rather dead head 300 mi before I ever put anything on my deck for $1.15.
As stated,.. if your leasing on,.. Percentage,.. percentage. Depending on the perks,.. most see 70 - 80% of the gross line haul and should allow your NET profit to increase substantially. . Try looking into pulling reefer. Thats usually good for teams.
$1.15 is insulting.

We are making about 1.30 including fsc and monthly bonus, plus the fuel network saves us about .50 cents a gallon at the pump.

Wow. Just...
...Wow.
Do NOT move a truck for those rates. As noted above, get into percentage pay. Your worst rates will be far better than your current mileage rate.spyder7723 and noluck Thank this. -
Depending on the lane, and miles,.. most here shoot for $2.25 - $3+ mi. Just giving you a heads up at how low you are running for.
Base your trips on time and labor from start to finish,.. to include detention, loading, travel time etc. $100 hr for time and labor should be a bare minimum. Anything less and you are cutting yourself short. Example,.. a 420 mi run requires roughly 7 hrs of drive time, 1+hr to load, 1+ hr to unload plus any unforeseeable detention. Different loads and shippers require more or less time. Easy loads,.. 1 hour minimum. If more labor is involved,.. you should be paid for your time. 420 mile haul should pay between $950 - $1000 at a bare minimum. A better rate would be $1500. If your not getting that,.. you are hauling cheap.
I dont care if I am loaded with 1500lbs or 40,000 lbs,.. time is money.
I dont know much about Van freight,.. but $1.80 - $2.50 should still be attainable.
