And one more thing. . You can go to ATS and get 42 cents per mile and 1 day off in 7 days and be 2-3 weeks on the road OR you can go to other smaller companies in Chicago area and easy get 55 cents per mile and be treated with respect and have home time you need. It's up to you folks

42 is good money for OTR. 1 day per 7 is standard for OTR as well. And the company driver tarp pay, detention, all of it is standard OTR fare. And all of it, 100% is told to you before you show up.

Ok. I get what you're saying now, but there was a lot of back story that you left out in your original comment.
That being said, it's not just flatbed - they won't let in a 53 reefer either. There's ways around this now, of course. Run 40...no scale because the one at the bottom of Cajon pass burnt to the ground.
But that's neither here nor there.
Some of this is just crap you pick up over the years, yes. But tho I've picked it up thru personal experience as well as word of mouth, most of what I know that is trucking related but not driving related - is printed somewhere.
Like 53 spreads...generally speaking, the biggest reason they don't want them there is that it screws up your bridge law compliance.
Bridge law exists because of some messed up places you go to pick up in CA...like some of the windy/twisty places when you get off the 5 or 15 near Vista or Escondido. Or up on 17/1 around Santa Cruz. Even with tandems slid all the way forward, the last time I went to Santa Cruz, there's a couple spots on the route where one side is nearly scraping the rocks on the passenger's side and your steers are 2 feet into the opposing lane. And the funny thing is...to the best of my knowledge, it's s truck legal route! Why? Because if you're coming from the north, the only alternate route is to run 101 clear down to Gilroy, over west on 152 (which also has a lot of twists and turns going west of there), and then back up the PCH at Watsonville. Way too dang far outta route.
And try taking ANY truck south of about Carmel on PCH....well...just don't...pretty sure it's not legal anyway but it'd be suicidal if it were.

Bottom line is...any time you're gonna do any type of trucking...well...anywhere...But ESPECIALLY in the Kommunist Republic of California...know BEFORE you go. Or learn expensive lessons. And NEVER EVER trust dispatch when it comes to something this important. That rule that "Nobody cares about me as much as ME," applies. Sure, they care about the driver a bit. And they care about the COMPANY'S SafeStat score a bit MORE. But at the end of the day, you even said it...They ALL go home at 5! Think that person who told you to just go ahead and go is gonna pay your fine? Nope. Not even if you had it documented.
And dispatchers are notorious for saying stuff like that over the phone instead of a Qualcomm.

THE ECONOMY TANKED IN JAN 2016,THE RETAIL SECTOR WAS DYING,PAD WRAP SERVICES WERE GREATLY REDUCED...THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED....ACCORDING TO DAT SERVICES....VAN FREIGHT DROPPED TO 1.32 (GROSS) / MI IN FEB.2016. STAYED LOW UNTIL JAN 2017.

VAN RATES ARE NOW UP AROUND $1.85-$1.90 MI. DEMAND FOR VANS IS UP.:):):).

I was operating my own authority from May 2013 - April 2016 and finally parked the Pete in the driveway to work for someone else.

It's been a year + now and freight is beginning to move again. Bilateral trade agreements with other countries (instead of "Global Economic Initiatives" i.e.: NAFTA/CAFTA/TPP.) IS BEGINNING TO TAKE SHAPE.

even Texas House Republican Babin....introduced HR bill # 3282 Monday July,17th to delay Mandatory ELD compliance until Dec.18th 2019 !! :D:D ...... Great Scott ...what will be next ?

Since you don't know flatbeds, you can't spread a 53' flatbeds axles in California. It breaks their bridge law for distance from the kingpin and your axles. I can also tell you ATS teaches that and would never have you break that. I did my time with them.
