Not arguing with you, just conversing. How do you do this when you have to have an inch of thread showing when secured?

    I can imagine that.

Having 2 20-foot containers on a flatbed has a way of creating that problem, if they're not long enough to go over the top.

Of you have an inch left after tightening up, that's an inch less you could have started with. On squishy loads like a vehicle on rubber air filled tires you almost always need as many threads exposed as possible. But on something with no give such as plate steel or a coil, if you pull the slack out of the chain first you won't get but a few pulls on the ratchet before its tight.

I always liked to open them up as far as I could. There was little more annoying than bottoming out while there was still slack in the chain, IMO.

You chain containers over the top? Screw that. One chain on the front and back and a couple straps over the top.

I can believe that. Your talking about x chains from the top inside corners?

I normally do to but some loads there just isn't enough room for that so you gotta shorten it up. And yep sometimes you misjudge it, bottom out and gotta start over.

I've done it that way and I like that, but two up against each other leaves no way to do that on the inside ends.

Only had to do that once, thankfully.

When they are butted up, I'll snake a chain through the locks and pull to the front. Do that on both sides at the joint, then one at the front and rear pulling back. A couple straps over each for good measure and its not going anywhere.
