Company Driver to IC

I think its easier being a company driver, less headache and good pay. I have been working less and will probably net more than I grossed as a company driver if things keep going the way they are.

You don't really get to choose your loads like it was a load board or anything. Most of the time I get what I get, but if its something I know I don't want or its just cheap rate or too much time on the load (like 3 days to drive 500 miles) I'll refuse. I haven't had to do that this year except at the home terminal because I've been running good lanes. Running the Northeast is easy, just all about timing. I've sat in worse traffic between Louisville and Cincinnati than I have between NYC and Hartford.

I'll compare April '17 as an IC to April '16 and '15 as a company driver for pay and hometime:
As an IC for the month the gross was $16,955.48 with an after deduction net of $10,658.95
From that I take truck payment, health, tolls, and maintenance which brings it down to $6465.04

So I'll pay income/payroll/ssi tax on $6465.04 and I was home 12 days total

2016 April co driver gross: $4351.56 I didn't really run to much, most of this was accrued vacation/personal/sick days being cashed in
2015 April co driver gross: $4872.25 First two weeks running system, took a week off, then did local/regional for the remainder before hitting system at the end of the month.

 

Plan to keep it updated more often.

The health insurance is only a third party supplemental, nothing that superior has anything to do with other than give your name to a sales rep. You would still need a regular insurance plan, I got a silver plan off the state exchange. If you can get on a spouses insurance that would be the best way to go.

This last settlement marks a full year as an IC.

Since my last update on April 26th I've grossed $16,378.57, for a total of $59,697.18 ytd. So that makes for around $160,000/year gross.
I was home the 21st to 27th of April and I've been home since last Friday and probably won't go out until the weekend.
Total hub miles since April 13 were 10,680, ytd total of 35,244 and $1.69/mi ytd hub avg

I did have to deadhead from western PA all the way home 750 miles so that brought my overall mileage rate for the period below $1.60
I could have maybe avoided the deadhead if I changed my homedate, but decided not to because this week I have a lot of stuff going on at home I need to take of and didn't want to lose the days at home.

 

I feel $1.60 is the minimum to make it profitable, so $1.69 hub isn't bad but its not get rich quick money either.
I fuel exclusively at Pilot/Flying J (sometimes Love's) and I avoid fueling in PA/MA/CT/NY. PA has the highest fuel prices outside of the West Coast; NY isn't as bad as CT or MA so I'll fuel there in a pinch. IC get discounts at PFJ/Petro/TA/Loves.
This last settlement I had $1182.54 taken out for fuel, in my book I recorded $1482.56 at the pump. So that's close to 20% discount off pump prices.
Superior also handles the IFTA, they pay if you owe and keep any refund.
