Discussion in 'Western Star Forum' started by RocketyMan, May 4, 2017.

What bulb type do you put in the low beam spot?

  1. Halogen H7/H9

    75.0%
  2. LED (please specify kit and picture of beam on wall)

    25.0%
  3. HID (please specify kit and picture of beam on wall)

Correct. When driving on wet roads, the light pattern really does no good showing the road at all. The headlight assembly is really nice with the two projectors...but I'm curious as to why WST did not utilize LED or HID.

I'm half tempted to just buy an HID and try it out.

The HID requires an external box that needs to be mounted somewhere. That box is also subject to all the vibration and rough ride of a semi.

The LED does not and is likely less expensive.

After seeing the results of the LEDs I got I really can't imagine HID could realistically be any better.

I could be wrong, your mileage may vary, so on and so forth...

    Just a thought...

True. Those are the things that have to be considered. When looking at the headlight housing, there is actually quite a bit of room inside if the box fits through the hole. So the HID converter box could be placed inside and kept out of the weather. Whichever kit it is determines the size of this thing. In addition, I found LED kits that have the same box that allows the LED housing to be smaller. Regarding both LED and HID depends on the MFG and kit they offer.

A friend of mine has a 5700XE and he goes through headlight and fog light bulbs like crazy. Even the LEDs seem to be going out and I think the latest once he bought were made by PIAA.

My 4900 came with sealed beam head lights. Talk about a slap in the face. I replaced mine with Speakers LEDs. Big difference and they are holding up to the rocks better too.

I bet those J.W. Speakers LED were expensive!
Has your friend with the 5700XE tried an HID setup yet?

    Re the JW Speaker lights:

Yeah, I'm in agreement, they must have been expensive.....

My question is HOW WELL DO THEY WORK? Are they even sort of worth the cost? Anybody have a set that they would like to report about?

I don't think he has looked at HID conversion yet. The LEDs were about $340.00 each.

They are worth every penny in my book. I do spend a lot time in the dark during the Alaskan winters. The sealed beams the truck came with were an absolute joke. Also, I pretty much had to replace one on each trip due to rocks going through them. I actually polished the Speakers again today since they looked hazy after the long winter. I bought them at the NAPA Traction store in Anchorage and they have pretty fair prices. About $340.00 for each one.

I bet if your friend with a 5700xe did the HID conversion, he would be very impressed. I just have yet to see if anyone else has done this...maybe convince your friend to try it? :)
