All of those state specific Intrastate permits you're talking about are a one time fee for the carrier, not per truck, and those permits don't expire. I have been going through getting my intrastate permits and there are some states that are just fracking expensive and I'll hold off when my fleet gets bigger or I find my fleet doing a lot of Intrastate loads in those states. Some states like MO were free to get.
For a carrier to sit there and charge drivers a huge amount for intrastate permits is just plain old robbery. Now there are annual weight permits and trip specific permits that are needed but even the annual permits cost less than $30 a year. Plates after the first year for the 48 and Canada run around $1700. Your first year will be more because they base your price off the average miles run in each state. When you renew, your cost will be based off the actual miles you ran in each state, so it could possibly be even lower than that if you stay out of the expensesive states.

400 bucks a year for the western 11 and all of Canada (including Oregon and new Mexico mileage tax, no charge backs for ifta... They are certainly not making money of it. As for the actual cost of plates, no two trucks will ever have the same cost cause like you said it is based of of the percentage of miles ran in each jurisdiction. If you live out west and run i5 all year your cost will be drastically higher than someone like me who runs mostly the southeast and Ohio valley.Last edited: Jun 11, 2017
drvrtech77 and redoctober83 Thank this. -
Ah, yes good old Oregon and New Mexico. KY and NY are the same and require getting permits but they are one time and you're good to go.
Having a fleet and an authority creates a sheetz ton of papperwork and craziness to keep track of, LOL. There are those days where I wish I was under someone elses authority, but then I see my bank account and feel better -

They have flat rate options as well. When you add fuel surcharge, probably not much different than what most are averaging here at Schneider.
