Well I'm a owner operator and I have done a little of everything, rails, reffers, ports dry van and some tankers, few months ago a small company(I was the only one with tanker endorsement) decided to take a tanker contract and hire me and I loved it(mostly the money) they lost the contract. Now that I have tasted the awesome pay side of it I spoke to liquid cargo and they are expanding around here, linden bulk is a powerhouse here, quality carriers and their port division (boasso America) is hiring also and Schneider is not that far from my house alot of options and I need some opinions to make a good paying decision.
The only thing I'm really big is hometime and money. Which one would you choose?
Linden bulk, liquid cargo or quality carriers

I'm from Ohio and so not familiar with NJ.... sorry... but PAVING is what I haul (asphalt) and but for the rain these last 2 days, there's money in moving this stuff, man. Can you google your local paver/asphalt/aggregate companies? If you could get into moving 6122 and/or 3257, it's NON haz, and pays REALLY well, especially this time of year, despite the rain.
Heck they are patching IN the rain in Ohio, these days.JimmyWells and kw550cat Thank this. -
Call island Transport and ask about their owner operator program.
Home every night- they work you around 10 hours a day and don't push your logs. 5 days a week, Saturdays are half days during the busy time.
Last time I was leased their fuel was 1.15/gallon- wholesale price.
Hauling liquid asphalt (hazmat) mainly in NJ. Out of NJ, you will do a lot of NJ local, some into PA, and Newburgh NY, and close by upstate. Long Island not as much and there was one run to the Bronx but it was tight and nobody really liked going there.
They take like 80/week for liability and you need workerscomp
They will tell you to install a product pump (have one for sale) but tell them you want a few months after being leased to test the waters and see if they are a good fit for you and you for them. Hold your ground (bring this up if they start talking about the pump)
Busy season, I took home around 2800/week less fuel and insurance. Winters are slow, but they have occasional good contracts out of philly to jersey.
And you don't run many miles-figure maybe 1500 or so average.jdiesel3406 and G13Tomcat Thank this. -
Two more things:
1. Linden doesn't have the best reputation based on the information on this forum
2. One of Dana's daughter companies for dry bulk had an account that was local in New Jersey and once a week to New Hamphsire
And one more thing (making it 3)
Carbon Express in Jersey had a dedicated account into Canada for owner operators running ink and it looked tempting. Predictable time off, home throughout the week and all major holidays off.jdiesel3406 and G13Tomcat Thank this. -

so I went to the interview with quality carriers terminal in rahway,nj
the good things:
free parking
3.3 miles from my house
really local loads
from what I was told most of the o/o were company drivers
62% of the load terminal average is just about 2k take home after all deductions(not really sold in it until I see my own #)
in house shop
maintenance loans
sat down with terminal manager and safety at the same time if one didn't know the answer the other one did
no more going into the ports unless I want to
get to 42 dollars for detention
get paid if I have to use the pump
I was encourage by the safety to go to the other interviews and compare which one is the better option for me
the ehh not so good things:
175 for driving to the school in Baltimore
150 a day while on training
must do atleast a week of training with a driver once I'm finish the school(750 a week is not the greatest but not a deal killer)
tomorrow have linden bulk and Thursday liquid cargo
now what if I have a truck registered on my name( 2003 Kenworth t800 I have to renew registration) and the other one under my company (centuryclass 06) will they do registration and plates? -
Just wanted to say congrats on things looking up: I've not heard any bad re: QC on the tanker side... and know nothing on the other two. Following, either way. Best wishes. -
Ruckie,
Thanks for providing the board with good info.
Keep us updated.G13Tomcat Thanks this. -
So I visited liquid cargo today in NJ and it was weird
1. you have to wait 3 weeks for your first paycheck but they will give you advance as you go
2 no training offered
3 no parking(175 to 250) a month in this area
4 no company ezpass(company will reimburse you but isn't like the discounted rates big companies get)
5 I found very unprofessional someone talking bad about other truck companies (as truckers we can do it, but as office personnel I just do like it even when you trying to get people to join your business)
Guy just kept talking until I have tell him that I have to see a rate sheet... Supposedly getting in sometime tomorrow -
The 3 week back pay is probably a form of escrow. If you need money from them, or more than likely with the equipment. (Who pays for it).
No training will be interesting.
