i have had my b license for about a year. I have been trying to contact the DMV about the process of what test I need to take I order to get my a permit. A lot of friends of mine say the only thing i need to take is the combination endorsement. I don't want to retake my general knowledge just wondering if I would have to. I live in Mass. thanks in advance for any advice

Couldn't you call the dmv?
I thought most states required a skills test in a tractor trailer along with an airbrakes test?Airborne Thanks this. -
I have tried calling the last three days with no luck yet so I thought I would reach out to others. I have already taken the air brakes endorsement. I went to school for my b but my work as a tractor with a dump body that I will be able to take for my a. Just have to figure this out and get my permit and start practicing

There is a combination, general knowledge, air braking and any endorsements you already have on your B, you will retake those for the A.

Whatever you do, make sure you road test in a manual tractor trailer for the A. Don't do it in a Auto or get a restriction. Companies hate restrictions even though they might be buying autos hand over fist.pattyj Thanks this. -

What ever the revenuer hands to you in the (Yes we still use that word here, the equivlant is the DMV) form of written tests is the tests you take. You evidently have passed them with good scores and so on. There is no stress for you in taking these things sseveral times in your life time.
The big thing is to get a manual transmission truck. You will test on that rig and prevent the state from slapping a restriction against you by saying you cannot drive a manaul truck, only Automatics. Real truckers use manuals.
However a properly matched Auto to the correct engine makes for a old fart like me to actually sing it's praises once in a while. I despise the #### things because if you don't shut that truck off often enough, long enough (Goes to show teams, they never shut off) you are going to seriously brick that auto transmission require a rotator to come get you and tow you and your JIT busted load to the nearest dealer or company shop to hard reboot that pos computer inside your transmission. Im betting Windows Lite is the OS inside these #### things. But we drivers are shoo'ed away and not allowed to touch. Like children being mistreated int he auto shop for some reason instead of the professionasl we are supposed to be. -

My DMV where I am is so slow. Three people working there, one of them a supervisor. The other two pushes paper, stickers and takes pictures of people. You can show up, sit down in 6 minutes have all that you need done, done and gone down the road.
Unlike Glen Burnie Maryland off 2 before that old 97 was built decades ago. Two hours being passed floor to floor, staffer to staffer. Building to freaking building. I doubt that many of you old time truckers say back towards the late 40's will recall that hellhole up there in Maryland.
