The TND does not think like a brain does. It follows your settings and based upon what is in the map database. Not all roads are created equal. A freeway may be a freeway upon looking, but to the map data you can have different "weights" assigned to a freeway and if the route "weight" is lower then it will pick a route that is truck legal that has a "higher" "weight" assigned.

Too many variables that the map data has to look at. I cannot go into details to the details and what they are since it is restricted Data.

A Route that is not a Freeway, but a US route will be faster and shortest, but the Mapdata does not take into account the Lights and traffic. So the freeway would be the better choice.

You posted a route issue and I found a few different ways to get the route you need. The simplest was to compare routes - Toll/Non Toll option.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Here is a Pic. I asked the Developer and he said it is a new feature. This was added to the OverDryve Models which the 740 runs the same software. When a route can "save" 15% on a route you will see this pop up. This feature constantly runs in the background looking at your route.

    Thanks,
    Mark

So this will POP up on all routes, regardless of WiFi on or Off as long as it comes up with a route that is 15% shorter?
But should the original route that it picked be the shorter or faster route in the first place?
What is it saving 15% on, time, Distance, time?

I guess I'm just hard headed, but seems to me if the device offers preferences, it should give the route that matches those preferences. To my knowledge there were no preferences set on Google Maps, and it came up with the fastest/shortest route - that's how I came to realize the 730 wasn't sending me on the best route. I realize that Google Maps doesn't do truck routing, etc., but is very useful in cases like this. I don't see how RM can weight a roadway, in some proprietary algorithm, and come up with a route that is over an hour - by RM's own calculation - longer when the preferences are for the FASTEST route... Additionally, the "weighted" route has over 250 miles of US highways, whereas the best route has less than 70 miles of a state highway and the remainder is interstates.

So, from your previous responses to routing issues, this is what I've gleaned: 1. Manipulate the various routing preferences to see if you get the best route; 2. Use "compare routes" function, using two different options (toll vs non-toll and "based on preferences"). Each time having to re-enter the destination address (or select from history/address book). Oh, and "compare routes" isn't an option if you're using the "multi-stop trip" function, so you'd have to cancel the entire trip and re-enter it once you come up with the best route. Am I missing something here? Does the Overdryve 8 use the same proprietary weighting system?
With all due respect, no sir, the "simplest" way would be for the RM product to give me the best truck route based on my preferences without having to manipulate anything, or rely on Google.

I hate to say this, but it does seem that Google Maps has a better mapping system over RM, Garmin, CoPlilot and a few others. If they ever do a Truck mapping program, I think everyone is screwed.
Why does Rm and the rest all have to try and reinvent the wheel?

Yup Yup, I have been saying the same thing for years now but I don't think anyone is listening. They just keep on coming up with excuses as to why things are the way they are instead of
coming up with a better routing system. I have said it many times in this forum, we don't need fastest or shortest options, all we need is Truck Practical routing, nothing more nothing less.

The excuses is what caught my attention and makes me wish for alternatives. Proprietary weighting for roadways? Sounds suspect to me. Not saying Mark is lying, but maybe someone is blowing smoke at him...

I just don't think that the programmers have a realistic concept of what a truck driver goes through on the road and what we need to have to move 75 ft or more safely and efficiently.

Maybe Rm should hire some of the Google guys to help with the mapping system, or Hey better yet. One buy the other and produce a new unit using the Google mapping as the basis.?????
    Now there is a winner!!!

Today is another perfect example of the RM screw up. I had to go to Tyson off I81 Ex 119. Now can someone figure this out???
I'm coming Southbound - My 740 had me get off exit 116 turn left onto Rt 901 - then instead of letting me turn Left again onto Valley road, A nice Truck road, NO it took me down this cow road, - Valley Road all the way to Highridge Rd, Turn Left again, and then Finally Turn Right onto Keystone Blvd - WHY IN THE HELL DID IT DO THAT !!!! ?????
I should have just gotten of Ex 119, Turn Left, came up @ 2/4 mile and then Turned Left on Keyston. Would have saved me about 6 miles of BS and bumping around.
Can some one PLEASE tell me WHY it did that???

There must be some kind of truck restriction on that piece of road, whether current or outdated, to make the gps route around it, or maybe just another routing screw-up.
